Late Race Caution Gives Dale Earnhardt Jr First XFINITY Win since 2010

It was Daytona in 2010 when Dale Jr. driving the famous number three car that he rolled into victory lane but today in Richmond driving for the final time in a XFINITY series car would roll into victory lane over Ty Dillon. This would be Dale’s 24th series victory of his career while leading 128 laps en route to victory lane.

“In the first 20 laps there was a lot of guys as good, maybe better than us,” Earnhardt said. “I think it was Ty (Dillon) was better than me on the last couple of laps. It was a good race and a good finish.”

This would also be this first time Dale Earnhardt Jr. would win as a team owner in a car he owned.

“I knew we had great cars at Richmond and that’s why I picked to run here,” Earnhardt said. “This was one of the races I asked if I could run, so I was lucky to just be able to drive our stuff here.”

Dillon who would go on to win the $100,000 XFINITY Dash 4 Cash by virtue of a late race multi-car incident involving three of the four contenders that started with Allgaier and Poole out front and collecting Jones who would take his car to the garage with heavy damage.

“This place has been really tough on me and my team as a whole. To finish second and run the way we did all day was just impressive.”

Elliott Sadler and JR Motorsports team mate from Emporia Virginia would finish in third with Suarez and Austin Dillon to round out the top five.

Cole Custer in his XFINITY series debut who was marred in a last raced incident would roll to a sixth place finish.

Justin Allgaier, Erik Jones, and Brennan Poole all were involved in a late race accident as Dash 4 Cash contenders. Poole would finish the day best in 10th with Jones in 34th and Allgaier in 35th.

The weekend at Richmond International Raceway will culminate with the Toyota Owners 400 at 1:00 pm with Kevin Harvick starting on the pole over Joey Logano.
