Marcos Ambrose Wins Nationwide Race at Watkins Glen

Marcos Ambrose drove his number 09 Richard Petty Motorsports Ford powered by Roush Yates Engines to his fourth consecutive NASCAR Nationwide Series win at Watkins Glen International on Saturday.

Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano made up an all Ford Racing front row after qualifying first and second Saturday morning. The Zippo 200 became intense early when Kyle Busch and Ambrose, who started together on the second row, tangled in the chicane on lap six. Ambrose’s pit crew brought him in for fresh tires and fuel under caution on lap 13 and set up a winning pit strategy.

Ambrose drove through the field quickly and held the top spot after the restart on lap 63 that followed the fifth and final caution of the race. With five laps to go Busch couldn’t get to the bumper of the number 09 and Ambrose took the checkered flag to earn the fourth win of the season for Roush Yates Engines and Ford Racing. Team Penske drivers Logano and Keselowski finished third and fourth.

“This win is really special,” said Ambrose, who led 48 laps of the 82-lap race at the 2.45 mile road course. “I’m just so thrilled for the guys. I had my tongue hanging out the whole day. There was nothing left. I tried to just hold him back and we were able to get the win.”

Ambrose now leads the NASCAR Nationwide Series in road course wins with five.

Mason Mitchell put down a fast lap of 16.782 seconds with his Roush Yates powered engine to win the ARCA Racing Series pole award on Saturday evening. Mitchell’s lap was just 0.001 seconds shy of his own track record set at Berlin Raceway last year. This is the fourth pole of the 2014 season for Mitchell and the sixth of his ARCA career.
