Cassill scores season’s third Top 10

Landon Cassill matched his best performance of the Nationwide Series season Saturday, charging over the final laps to finish eighth in the Gardner Denver 200 on the Road America four-mile road course.

Establishing new strength as a road warrior, Cassill equaled his eighth-place run earlier in the year at Talladega Superspeedway in scoring his third top-10 finish of the season.

Cassill, who logged a mountain of airline miles in commuting between the Road America race and the Sprint Cup event in Sonoma, Calif., over the weekend, returned to the Nationwide driver standings top 10 with the run.

“All in all, a great couple of days at Road America,” Cassill said. “It was a very unusual race, what with the rain and wet track and all, but we hung in there and got a great finish. My cap’s off to the guys on the team.”

Rain soaked the track, and much of the 53-lap race was run on a wet surface, forcing teams to use special rain tires.

Cassill started 25th. He was in 24th place with 23 laps to go but was 11th with three laps left. He made up three positions over the final run.

Brendan Gaughan won the race, scoring his first win in the series. The series’ next race is June 27 at Kentucky Speedway.
