He has had the privilege of traveling to races all across the state of Florida (as well as one race in Ohio), watching nearly everything with a motor compete for fame and glory, as well as participating in various racing schools to get the feel of what racecar drivers go through every week.

Following an extended break after the first X Prix of Extreme E Season 2, the on-track action resumed with two rounds in one week at the NEOM Island X Prix, co-organised by Automobile Club d’Italia and Regione Sardegna.

The action-packed Sardinian double-header saw Christine GZ back in action for her Veloce Racing alongside Lance Woolridge, with both drivers looking to build on the promise shown in NEOM, Saudi Arabia.

Veloce Racing looked set for one of the quickest Qualifying times at the Desert X Prix in February. However, with the finish line fast approaching, GZ carried too much speed into one of the final corners and the car flipped into a dramatic barrel roll.

The result was a fractured ankle for GZ and a spot in the Crazy Race for the team, where Hedda Hosås made her Extreme E debut in GZ’s stead, but the team just missed out on the Final.

Sardinia offered the British outfit a chance at redemption. Double the racing meant double the points, and the British team managed to move off the bottom of the standings. ABT CUPRA XE sit in Veloce’s wake, but the team will need to push hard if they are to catch JBXE, who currently sit 11 points ahead.

Veloce Racing was playing catch-up from the outset in Sardinia when Woolridge missed Free Practice due to illness, which was then followed by broken suspension in Qualifying 1, but the team managed to bounce back in the second round of Qualifying.

A confident run in the five-car Q2 Heat saw GZ make a blistering start, where she got the better of the JBXE car off-the-line in her first race back from injury.

As the lead female in the race, GZ handed over to Woolridge in third position and the South African took second place from McLaren XE immediately. Veloce received a post-race penalty for speeding in the Switch Zone, but their participation in the Crazy Race was already confirmed having finished second behind ACCIONA | SAINZ XE Team in the Heat.Veloce Racing bowed out of the NEOM Island X Prix I in spirited fashion following a nail-biting Crazy Race.Running in third position on the first lap, Woolridge was faced with a reversing Sara Price, as the No.99 GMC Hummer EV Chip Ganassi Racing car pulled back on to the track.Woolridge took impressive evasive action to avoid contact, but the brakes of his ODYSSEY 21 were damaged when he was forced through the track-side signage in the heart-stopping incident. Veloce Racing eventually finished second in the four-car race.The first-ever Extreme E double-header concluded with Veloce Racing missing out on a place in the Island X Prix II Final in another winner-takes-all Crazy Race.There was drama from the outset as Woolridge went side-by-side with Genesys Andretti United Extreme E on the run down to the first turn. Both cars made contact as Woolridge slotted into second during the early running, but all was still to play for as the race progressed.Woolridge kept Catie Munnings under pressure throughout his lap and was left with little alternative but to make a lunge for the lead as they neared the Switch Zone. The South African tried to squeeze the car down the inside of his rival over a jump, but further contact tipped the Veloce car into an unfortunate half spin.

GZ took over the car in second place and made a valiant effort against Kevin Hansen in the JBXE car, but finished the race in third-place after a hard fought week for the team.

Christine GZ, Veloce Racing, said: “It just wasn’t our week in Sardinia. Of course, I have had a challenging few months recovering from my accident in Saudi earlier in the year, and the pace just hasn’t quite been there for us as a team this week. We showed flashes of speed and we really felt that we had a chance to make the final. We gave it everything, but it just wasn’t to be this time.”

Lance Woolridge, Veloce Racing, said: “The car has been much improved as the week has developed and we were fighting for victory in the Crazy Race, which could have put us into the final. I gave it my best shot and had to try to get past the Andretti car, but contact unfortunately sent us out of contention. That’s probably been the story of our week, as we have not had the fortune with us at the right moments, but we will come back stronger in Chile in September.”

The 2022 Extreme E campaign now moves on to Chile on 24-25 September, before concluding with the season finale in Uruguay on 26-27 November.

As consumers gear up to hit the road this summer, AutoNation, Inc. (NYSE:AN), America’s largest and most admired automotive retailer, has released the results of a new online survey which examines who’s taking road trips this summer, the age of their road trip vehicles and decisions about pre-road trip car maintenance.  The survey was conducted online by The Harris Poll on behalf of AutoNation among over 2,000 U.S. adults. 

 

The survey found that 80% of Americans will take a summer road trip this year, with nearly one in five (19%) planning summer road trips in a vehicle that is 10 years old or older. The survey also shed light on plans consumers have to service their vehicles before they leave on their summer road trip, with nearly one in six (15%) planning to skip a vehicle check-up entirely. 

 

“This survey indicates that those taking a road trip could be adding significant mileage, along with wear and tear to their vehicles, throughout this summer,” said Marc Cannon, Executive Vice President and Chief Customer Experience Officer for AutoNation. “The all-American road trip should be memorable and enjoyable and taking simple pre-trip maintenance measures, especially when traveling in an older vehicle, will ensure that highly anticipated road trip plans don’t derail. We were surprised to see that some will forgo the necessary preventative safety measures, and we want to remind summer travelers that a quick service check is always advisable.” 

 

AutoNation’s survey also uncovered that 74% of those planning to take a summer road trip will travel with their families. Unsurprisingly, safety seems to be a high priority for parents of children under 18 years, with the survey finding that this group is nearly 20% more likely to bring their vehicle in for service before leaving on their road trip than those without children under 18 years (75% vs. 57%).  

 

“No matter when you travel or who you travel with, AutoNation recommends that at the minimum road warriors get their tires, oil and fluids checked if they are traveling more than 500 miles and planning to be out of town for more than two nights,” Cannon said. “AutoNation locations around the country offer a free and fast ‘pit stop’ service that anyone can take advantage of.” 

 

Other findings include: 

 

  • married couples are significantly more likely to be planning to get their vehicles serviced before the road trip than those who are unmarried (70% vs. 57%);  
  • 10% of those who plan to take a road trip will bring their pets; 
  • more college graduates are planning a summer road trip this year that those without a degree (86% vs. 77%); and 
  • 68% of adults 65 and older are taking a road trip this summer 

 

AutoNation recommends the following tips for those going on a road trip this summer:  

 

  • stop by AutoNation for a fast and free “pit stop,” which includes tire pressure checks and fluid top-offs, as well as multi-point inspections by certified technicians; 

     
  • download AutoNation’s Summer Road Trip music playlist on Spotify or Apple Music to keep the drive upbeat and fun; 

     
  • consider a portable Wi-Fi device to keep the family entertained during the long drive; 

     
  • pre-download a few audiobooks for everyone to enjoy together; 

     
  • don’t forget headphones and phone chargers;  

     
  • pack medications for nausea, fever, pain and allergies and keep them handy; 

     
  • remember to bring hand sanitizers, masks, tissues and a car trash bin; 

     
  • pack a cooler with healthy snacks, water and juices, and don’t forget a collapsible dog bowl if traveling with a pet; and 

     
  • plan fun rest stops in advance, and don’t be afraid to take the scenic route and enjoy the adventure that lies ahead! 

Survey Method 

This survey was conducted online within the United States by The Harris Poll on behalf of AutoNation from May 9 - 11, 2022 among 2,039 U.S. adults ages 18 and older, of whom 1,609 plan to take a summer road trip this year. Today’s teenagers have access to everything at the tip of their fingers 24/7 thanks to their cellphone. How would they feel if the tables are turned on them and their parents have this access at the tip of their fingers, only it’s to monitor their driving behavior?
 
It might surprise you to learn that teens being tracked behind the wheel via driving monitoring apps, don’t mind it too much.  

Progressive surveyed parents of teen drivers and unrelated teen drivers to understand how they navigate driving safely. Monitoring apps can be an effective tool to promote safe driving, in fact 54% of parents use a driving tracking app for teen driver monitoring.  

The survey found that:

·       For teens who are not currently being monitored

o   22% said it would make them feel safer

o   39% would not like it 

o   38% would not care

·       Teens already being tracked have a less negative view:

o   33% say it makes them feel safer

o   49% reported neutral feelings

o   18% say they don’t like being monitored 

 

The report also reveals how often parents use monitoring apps (37% daily vs. 25% a couple of times a week), if they discussed using them with their teen (91% yes vs. 9% no), and whether they discuss their teen’s driving habits with them (90% yes vs. 10% no). 

Progressive recently released a new report, “Consumers Embrace Online Car Buying” with survey data revealing consumer car shopping and buying behavior. In the past five years, online car buying has become a growing trend that more and more Americans are taking advantage of due to its haggle-free process and time-saving transactions.

The survey found that:

  • Online car buyers report high satisfaction with buying, trading in, and financing their cars
    • Nearly four out of five online car shoppers (78%) report feeling highly satisfied with their shopping experience, versus 58% for in-person buyers
    • 66.5% of people who bought online traded in a vehicle compared to 49.6% of people who bought at a dealer traded in a vehicle
    •  Of those who traded in a vehicle online, 79.6% were highly satisfied (97% were highly or somewhat satisfied combined); Compared to trading it at a dealer 56.5% were highly satisfied (93.5% were highly or somewhat satisfied combined)
  • Online car sales companies are posting remarkable growth – Vroom’s unit sales were up 123% year over year in their 2021 third-quarter report
  • 25% of online car buyers ranked being able to find the exact car they wanted via online sites as their number one reason for shopping online.

This may indeed be the case, and my recent experience in trying to purchase a new Ford Maverick has been primarily online. However, as I have started shopping, I have found that if dealers aren't truthful with their actual inventory, shopping online is pointless. Bait and switch is a tactic as old as sales itself, and simply unfair to consumers. 

How will the shift in car buying continue to change over the next several years? The future is bright for online car marketplaces and improvements will only continue to support the trend of online car buying.

The leading authority on commercial vehicles, Work Truck Solutions®, released its second quarter ComTrend Analysis of new and used commercial vehicles. Although there are still many supply chain challenges in the industry, certain positives were noted. 

New Work Trucks

A look at the data  shows the average price of new commercial vehicles dropping slightly, by just over 1%, when compared to prices for Q1 2022. This seems to be good news for commercial buyers. However, when comparing new work truck prices to YoY numbers from the same quarter in 2021, they were still up more than 9%. Additionally, web leads for new commercial vehicles showed a spike as Q1 2022 ended, but the numbers “normalized” shortly thereafter leading into the second quarter. And finally, stocking levels for new commercial vehicles were up by more than two units per dealer during the most recent quarter when compared to the first quarter of 2022, suggesting that a little relief may be in sight, for both dealers and business buyers alike.   

Used Work Trucks

The median mileage for used vehicles sold was up again, although only slightly, in the second quarter of 2022; but when comparing the numbers to the same quarter in 2021, the jump was almost 30%, indicating interest in used work trucks and vans remains strong. Further indications of strong demand for used commercial vehicles was demonstrated by another jump in the average price, which went up by more than $2,000 from the prior quarter. When compared to the same quarter in 2021, the increase was much more significant, coming in at almost a 27% increase.

Commenting on the latest data, Kathryn Schifferle, CEO of Work Truck Solutions, said “The second quarter shows the continued demand for both new and used commercial vehicles. Given that these work trucks and vans fuel so many businesses throughout the entire economy, it makes sense that shoppers for these vehicles continue to search for and purchase them.” She went on to say, “Reading between the lines, the statistics also indicate that dealerships continue to have significant opportunities in this market, especially those who stay at the forefront of keeping in touch with customers and potential buyers - those are the ones who will be well positioned going forward.”  

 A racehorse drowned in a pond at a track at MGM Northfield Park in Ohio on Monday after finishing second in a harness race, the Ohio State Racing Commission confirmed on Wednesday.

Handlers were unhooking the horse named Alfred Hanover from the two-wheel race bike when a nearby tractor scared him and he ran into the pond and drowned, Freddie Hudson, CEO of the U.S. Harness Racing Alumni Association, told Cleveland TV station WKYC.

Marty Irby, the executive director of Animal Wellness Action, told Reuters that the Ron Burke-trained horse was still wearing his leg hopples when he entered the water, which prevented him from being able to swim.

Irby added that a similar type of incident had occurred at MGM Northfield in the past and track officials had previously said they would put up a barrier around the pond but did not. Construction on a fence had started on Wednesday, Irby said.

"Where else would we tolerate any athlete drowning during a sporting event without a serious investigation? The authorities should investigate this incident, and MGM Northfield should elevate their standards to protect the horses at all costs," continued Irby.

This event, though tragic, is definitely an outlier, stated Steven Wolf of Steven Wolf Consulting. 

"It is very rare that racehorses drown as in this case. Yet, it was the second horse to drown within a year at MGM Northfield Park. They have already put up a makeshift fence until a new one is installed," stated Wolf.  "Nearly every racetrack in North America has an infield pond. In most cases it is for fire safety to allow firefighters access to water in case the grandstand catches fire. Tracks then try to beautify the ponds with fountains and lights and even pink flamingos. 
 
I was led to understand at Pompano Park that in 58 years only one horse ever drowned. Some have gone in it, but were rescued. "
 
"People need to understand the following," Wolf continued.
 
"1. Horses are natural born swimmers.
2. A harness racing pacer wears restraints on their legs called hobbles. Mix that in with its harness and the long lines that reach back to the driver so he can steer and control the horse. All this equipment and a horse thrashing in the water, the lines and hobbles restrict the horses leg movements, they get tangled up and drown.
3. A harness racing trotter does not wear any hobbles and can thus swim freely if need be.
4. Most horses that get loose do not want to go into a pond and try to head back to their stable. But there are always exceptions."
 
MGM Northfield Park did not immediately respond to a request for comment but general manager Matt Buckley told WKYC that the track was "deeply saddened" by the death.
 
"It is unfortunate that situations like this have occurred," added Fred Segal, Vice President, Florida USHWA and one of the authors of Broward County, Florida's Large Animal Disaster Plan. "Any facility that has horses, racetrack, training center or even boarding and turnout farms, needs to look at all potential hazardous situations and attempt to implement safety practices to try and prevent incidents like this from occurring. Further, it is my belief that all equine facilities should have a risk management plan and train people in large animal technical rescue."
 
"As the body count continues to climb," Irby concluded, "these rampant deaths continue to turn the betting public away from the horse racing industry." 
 
Although this is definitely an isolated incident, it still brings to the forefront the lack of safety advances in horse racing, especially compared to racing with hundreds of horsepower as opposed to just one. With the large sums of money spent on these events, one would think that the competitors, both human and equine, should be provided with the safest environment possible. However, it seems that most gaming companies would prefer to make the slot areas more plush that spend another penny on parimetuels.

Another unique aspect of this update is how each season of the Festival Playlist in Series 10 is inspired by the real-world Extreme E race calendar with new challenges and Seasonal Championships taking drivers to different locations in Mexico every week where they can push the ODYSSEY 21 to its limit in Dirt and Cross Country races.

In the Summer “Island X Prix” season, players will be racing along the east coast by Playa Azul; Autumn brings the “Energy X Prix” to the city of Guanajuato; Winter accelerates the action to the “Copper X Prix” Canyon; and finally, the competition heats up for the Spring finale as competitors race through the “Desert X Prix” Baja in Dunas Blancas.

Launched on 9 November 2021, the latest chapter in the Forza Horizon series, Forza Horizon 5, is the largest and most comprehensive Horizon game to date.

Players have been getting behind the wheel and experiencing some of the most diverse landscapes ever seen in a Forza Horizon title, including a living desert, a tropical jungle, and a towering snow-capped volcano, all in an authentic and vibrant depiction of Mexico.

Racing through unique, remote landscapes – sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Extreme E travels to locations around the world which have been severely impacted by climate change. At each location, a host of world-class teams compete off-road in electric races with the aim of using sport to highlight some of the biggest environmental issues facing the planet.
