The landmark event will be the first time that the NASCAR Mexico Toyota Series has competed in the United States.

“This is an important race for PIR and the NASCAR Mexico Toyota Series, as well as the sport in general,” said Sperber. “To have a sponsor of Toyota’s caliber join us in presenting this event is very exciting.”

The 75-lap event will feature a format that includes a scheduled break following the first 50-laps, with a 25-lap sprint to the finish. A full field of drivers from the NASCAR Mexico Toyota Series is expected to participate in the history making race, including 2012 series champion Jorge Goeters.

“It’s exciting to see the NASCAR Mexico Toyota Series grow to include a race in the Unites States at PIR,” said Les Unger, Toyota national motorsports manager. “This was a unique opportunity and we wanted to be a part of this historic event. We have enjoyed a meaningful relationship with PIR over the years -- currently the Toyota Avalon will serve as the track’s official pace car this year -- and this race entitlement is a great way to expand our partnership.”

“We commend Toyota and NASCAR Mexico Toyota Series decision to hold this historic inaugural race in Avondale at Phoenix International Raceway,” said Marie Lopez-Rogers, Mayor of Avondale, AZ and president of the National League of Cities.

Toyota began competing in NASCAR regional series racing in 2000, and later joined NASCAR Camping World Truck Series competition with the Tundra in 2004 and the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and NASCAR Nationwide Series with the Camry in 2007.

The NASCAR Mexico Toyota series will kick off its 10th season overall and seventh under the NASCAR banner at Phoenix International Raceway on March 1, 2013 followed by 14 races at eight different tracks throughout Mexico.

Danica Patrick and crew chief Tony Gibson learned what they needed to learn, then played it safe and finished 17th in their Budweiser Duel qualifying race Thursday at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway.

The Budweiser Duel consists of twin qualifying races that set the 43-car field for the season-opening Daytona 500, but Patrick was already locked into the Great American Race. She will start from the pole for the 55th Daytona 500, as she set the fastest lap in qualifying last Sunday, which locked her into the No. 1 starting position.

Patrick, driver of the No. 10 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet SS for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR), had nothing to gain in the Budweiser Duel other than experience and information. She got both, starting on the pole and staying up front for the first 10 laps of the 60-lap race around the 2.5-mile superspeedway. After learning how her car performed in the draft, she dropped to the rear of the field to avoid any potential accidents, ensuring that the same GoDaddy.com Chevrolet that set the quickest lap in time trials would start from the pole in the Daytona 500.

“It’s not an exciting mission when you’ve just got to bring it home,” Patrick said. “But, it’s for the Daytona 500, so you’ve got to keep that in mind. I learned that the outside (lane) is strong and it carries a lot of good momentum. And then I learned that you need some friends. I also learned that you can’t be too tight because that outside (lane) is what’s good, but you can’t be too tight, which my car was. It was way too tight at the start. But we wanted to be conservative. We didn’t want to have any issues with the Go Daddy Chevrolet. We wanted to make sure we’ve got it on that front row for Sunday.”

Patrick battled an issue with the tachometer during her one pit stop of the day on lap 42. Drivers use the tachometer to determine their speed down pit road, where they must mind 55 mph speed limit. When Patrick looked down at her dashboard, her tachometer was broken.

“Again, it’s not the most exciting way to race, but something was wrong with the tachometer,” Patrick said. “I didn’t know what speed I was doing, so I just went really slow (down pit lane). I tried to hit the right revs and I realized there are no lights for those revs. So, I knew there was something wrong, and then when I got out there on the track, it showed I was going 10,000 rpm. I’m sure I’d love to have the kind of speed that comes with 10,000 rpm, but it wasn’t right. So, it’s good to get those little bugs out of the way. We’ll fix them and be solid for Sunday with the Go Daddy Chevrolet.”

Gibson, her crew chief, was pleased with the day.

“The important thing is the car is in one piece for Sunday,” Gibson said. “She learned what she needed to learn, but the car is in one piece for the big race. We’ll tear the car down and change everything out, the tachometer obviously too, and do some practice on Friday and Saturday. It’s always a challenge to get through the Duels clean and we did that. Just really proud of everyone on this team and everyone at Go Daddy for supporting us.”

Patrick’s teammate and car owner, Tony Stewart, led the way for SHR by finishing sixth in the first Budweiser Duel race. Stewart, driver of the No. 14 Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1 Chevrolet, will start 13th in the Daytona 500.

SHR’s Ryan Newman finished 21st in the second Budweiser Duel after a cut right-rear tire with 20 laps remaining forced an unscheduled pit stop and dropped him off the lead lap. Newman, driver of the No. 39 Quicken Loans Chevrolet, earned the 34th starting spot for the Daytona 500, but because he’s going to a backup car due to the damage sustained from the flat tire, he’ll be forced to start the Daytona 500 from the back of the 43-car field.

Kevin Harvick won the first Budweiser Duel by .165 of a second over Greg Biffle. Juan Pablo Montoya, Jimmie Johnson and Kurt Busch took spots three through five. The rest of the top-10 consisted of Stewart, Brad Keselowski, Casey Mears, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Joey Logano.

Kyle Busch won the second Budweiser Duel by .093 of a second over Kasey Kahne. Austin Dillon, Clint Bowyer and Matt Kenseth took spots three through five. The rest of the top-10 consisted of Mark Martin, Paul Menard, Jeff Burton, Jamie McMurray and David Ragan.

With the Budweiser Duel now complete, the field for the Daytona 500 is set. On the pole is Patrick, and alongside her is Jeff Gordon. By notching the two quickest times during last Sunday’s time trials, both drivers were able to lock themselves into the front row for the Daytona 500.

Failing to qualify today for the Daytona 500 were Brian Keselowski and Mike Bliss.

For the second time of Daytona Speedweeks Roush Fenway’s Greg Biffle came up just short of victory, finishing second to Kevin Harvick in Thursday afternoon’s first Duel Qualifying race at Daytona International Speedway. Biffle came in second to Kevin Harvick in last Saturday’s Sprint Unlimited all-star race as well. Biffle will start Sunday’s Daytona 500 fifth based on the finish.

“I was on his bumper in three and four but you just have to have some help,” said Biffle. “You have to get that accordion affect. I knew there was a lot going on behind us so I didn’t think about backing up to the bumper of the 42 because I didn’t think that would be smart.

“You have to be in the right place at the right time,” added Biffle. “You have to get a run and have some cars with you and side draft a guy and get out front. A bunch of people wanted to know why I didn’t turn him. It doesn’t take any talent to wreck somebody for the win and wreck 20 cars behind you. You have to run as hard as you can and trade a little paint but at the same time we all have to finish.”

Unfortunately RFR’s Carl Edwards also suffered the same fate as in last Saturday’s Unlimited, getting caught up in an accident that dropped him to a 22nd-place finish in the day’s first duel.  Roush Fenway’s Trevor Bayne, running in the Wood Brothers’ No. 21, led a race-high 37 laps in the Duel, before getting caught up in the same accident that ended Edwards’ day.

“I don’t know exactly what happened, ”said Edwards.  It looked like Denny (Hamlin) got sideways and wrecked us. That is the fourth time we have wrecked since we have been down here. I told Jimmy we wrecked four times, so we have the black flag already and the race hasn’t even started.

“We are getting it out of our systems,” added Edwards. “Fortunately we have a really good group of guys and have a good backup car, which is our Shootout car. We will just go get them in the 500. I learned a lot. If we can just have a little luck I would not count our No. 99 team out. It will be a good race for us.”

Sprint Cup Rookie Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was Roush Fenway’s lone entry in the second duel, finishing 14th.

Stenhouse will start 28th in Sunday’s Daytona 500, while Edwards will roll off 36th. Bayne will start 33rd.

Sunday’s (Feb. 24) Daytona 500 is set for 1:00 p.m. EST and will be televised live on FOX.

Duel 1 Recap:

After starting 20th in Duel 1 at Daytona International Speedway, Bobby Labonte's first appearance in the top 10 was at lap 7 of the 150-mile qualifying race.  As the race advanced, his No. 47 Kroger/USO Toyota Camry was tight-handling off of Turn 4 during the 60-lap event at the 2.5-mile tri-oval. Also, when the 23-car pack made pit stops at different times, it broke the field up. Labonte came in alone at lap 38 for right-side tires. A caution around lap 52 involving Denny Hamlin, Carl Edwards, Trevor Bayne and others brought the field back together. With four to go, NASCAR turned the field loose. Labonte was credited with a 11th-place finish.

Bobby Labonte Duel 1 Post Race Quotes:

"I thought we were in a good position, but then I was too conservative coming into the pits," Labonte said. "I didn't have anybody to judge off of. We got back out there and just missed catching the lead draft. I guess after it was all said and done the cars we were going to catch was in that wreck. We were far enough behind it to miss it and we almost finished in the top-10. It was a good day."

"The last three laps were the ultimate excitement going three-wide not knowing where to go," Labonte continued. "We didn't pit there at the end to put on tires. So, you are in a bad place having old tires, going three-wide while the car's not handling as good. They all were probably handling a little rough. We had a respectable day and look forward to racing in the Daytona 500 on Sunday."
