Post Race Recap of the “Courtyard by Marriott, Night at the Races”, from Larry King Laws Langley Speedway.

In recent weeks out at Larry King Laws Langley Speedway, unseasonably cool evenings have been replaced by what is now, unseasonably hot temperatures for the time of year. For some race teams, the weather is welcomed as for others, the weather sends them back into their race notes in dealing with a hot and slick racetrack. Though the heat is sure to become worse as the summer months approach, the racing will heat up as well which is sure to prove nothing short of thrilling for the loyal race fans. Taking on the .397 flat banked oval in this week’s race action were the ERA Real Estate Professionals Winged Champ Karts, Larry King Law Modifieds in twin race events. Also in action were the Old Skool Video Games Super Streets, Carroll’s Automotive U-Cars, Riverside Paper Pro Six and the Bojangles Enduros. Here’s a recap of the evenings events and how it all went down.

ERA Real Estate Professionals Winged Champ Karts 20 Laps: Charlie Ray Lorah picked up his first win of 2018 in Winged Champ Kart action. To start the day in the Winged Champ Kart division, Aaron Leach picked up the pole for the second time this season. His time of 22.730 seconds earned him the top spot on the grid followed by Tillman Heuer in a share of the front row. Brandon Lorah, Matthew Leach and Charlie Ray Lorah had respectable laps starting third, fourth and fifth. Green flag was given to the field and emerging from the exit of turn two was outside pole sitter Tillman Heuer with the lead. Aaron Leach, Brandon Lorah, Charlie Ray Lorah and Danny Millard were all nose to tail in the early portions of the feature. By the halfway, Millard had dropped off but soon after, Aaron Leach was able to take the lead with just five laps to go. Then Charlie Ray Lorah made his move with two laps to go to take his turn at the lead and from there, go on to win in Winged Champ Kart action. Charlie Ray Lorah in Victory Lane, “Yes sir, I haven’t won a race in two years, I know we have three championships out here and haven’t won a race since 2015. Last year was a rough year, once you get into that slump it’s hard to get back into the winning ways. Can’t thank enough my uncle, my dad, my brother, they work on this thing. I work all the time and come out here and drive this thing”.

Larry King Laws Modifieds Twin 30’s; Shawn Balluzzo continued his strong start to the 2018 race season by sweeping the twin races and starting on the pole. Balluzzo posted his pole setting lap at 14.464 seconds knocked off Matt Carter who got the second spot in the grid. Danny Harrell, Brad Adams and Jamie Sample all showed speed and completed the five best in qualifying. Green flag was given and Matt Carter wasted no time in securing the point. Pole sitter Balluzzo quickly tucked in behind as the two leaders set sail. Danny Harrell, along with Bobby Gery and Brad Adams could do nothing but watch as the leaders were on a blistering pace. Past the halfway saw race leader Carter with only a two car length lead over Balluzzo as both were running nearly identical lap times as they encountered lap traffic. But then came the races first caution which would bunched back up the field setting up a restart to the feature. Back to the green, Carter bettered the restart of Balluzzo but laps later saw the leader go up the hill with Shawn Balluzzo taking the race lead. From there, it was all Balluzzo in clean air and crossing the stripe first for the race win. Balluzzo from Victory Lane, “It has been a long couple of weeks of work and everything like that”, explained the race winner. “I was sleeping on the starts, the guys did a great job, they worked their butts off all day”.

In the Modified nightcap, the field did an eight car invert per NASCAR rules forcing the race winner Balluzzo to start eighth in the second twin event who would then elect to start at the rear of the field for max points in Division 2 standings. Jamie Sample would get to lead the field to the green when the flag waved in the air. Once cleared from turn two, Sample then mounted up a six car length lead but laps later saw that lead collapse as Bobby Gery mirrored the race leaders line nose to tail. Matt Carter from the seventh starting position had worked his way to third while race one winner Shawn Balluzzo was in fifth as the halfway was completed. Laps later, second through fourth would battle for position and exactly what Jamie Sample, the race leader wanted to see as there was just five laps remaining. But then the caution waved for the spin of Brad Adams which would bunch up the field with Shawn Balluzzo showing second as the fastest car on the track. Back to the green, Shawn Balluzzo takes the lead but before the lap completes, another race caution which gives Jamie Sample back the race lead. Once again, another restart and this time the battle for the lead is good but Shawn Balluzzo would get by Sample the race leader and then go on to sweep the twin Modified race events. Balluzzo from Victory Lane, “Jamie did a great job, that was a good race”, said the race winner. “I hope the fans enjoyed all that tonight, the #60 car, he did a heck of a job, everybody did, that was some good racing from where I was. Tim, Allen my crew chief, we made some changes before the race, the kids are here, everybody is here”.

Old Skool Video Games Super Streets 40 Laps: Landon Abbott got his season going by picking up the Super Street win. Super Street action all began with the afternoon time trials. Landon Abbott had the hot wheel in the afternoon heat picking up his second pole on the season. His lap at 18.863 seconds was just thirteen thousandths of a second better than Bill Eaker Jr’s lap but worthy of his second spot in the front row. Gordon Weeks, Randy Akers and Dale Nichols rounded out the top five in Super Street qualifying. The green was shown to the twelve car field with pole sitter Landon Abbott leading lap one. After an early caution to the race, Abbott continued to show the way but this time joining in on the fun were Dale Parro along with Chris Roberts showing second and third respectively. Halfway into the race showed Landon continuing as the race leader and mounted a six car lead over Dale Parro who was still in chase. Both Dale Parro and Chris Roberts would need a caution but the feature stayed green as Landon Abbott goes flag to flag from the pole for the race win. Abbott from Victory Lane, “Gotta thank little Renno out at station four who couldn’t be here, Chris Williams, Patrick Cain, my wife Sidney and my two girls. Eric Schaffer spotting for me as a fill in, my dad and just everyone who makes this happen”.

Carroll’s Automotive U-Cars 25 Laps: Filling in for Courtney Shifflett, Michael Waters had to start from the rear of the field to pick up the race win. In U-Car qualifying, Austin Davis was back on pole once again in the series. Davis’s fast lap beat out the lap by Thomas Gildea which would make up the front row with notable Courtney Shifflett starting third. The flagman showed the field the green as they exited turn four and from there, the wrecking ensued. Thomas Gildea couldn’t get going which caused a pile up behind, fortunately, everyone returned to answer the next restart. Back to the green, Richard Ellis assumed command but soon after, Brandon Wood would battle for the lead, exchanging the lead for several laps before Wood settled in as the race leader forcing Richard Ellis to second. Brandon Wood’s lead would be short lived when Michael Waters was on the move and soon took his turn at the race lead. From there, the race would be halted by one more caution as Michael waters would motor on to win the U-Car event. Waters from Victory Lane, “Courtney, I wish she could have been in the car tonight but the heat got to her a little bit. She’ll be back in the car next race and even better, like to wish Courtney a happy Mother’s Day, now I got to go buy her something. I’m glad to get in this car tonight, but I’d rather Courtney to be in it than me”.

Riverside Paper Pro Six 30 Laps: Adam Florian continued his Pro Six division dominance by picking up yet another race win. The afternoon began with Pro Six qualifying and faring well once again was Adam Florian who picked up the race pole with a lap set at 16.899 seconds. Travis Wall would get the two spot just a bit better than a full tenth off of the pole sitter followed by Eric Schaffer, Casey Sipe and JB Sipe as the five best in Pro Six qualifying. Green flag was displayed and by turn two of the first lap did pole sitter Adam Florian secure the race lead. Outside row one starter Travis Wall quickly got in line with Eric Schaffer in tow but then the races first caution. Back to green flag racing, Travis Wall would get to lead a lap before Adam Florian had the upper hand in regaining his race lead. Laps later saw Florian break away, building up an eight car length lead before the second caution waved just before the halfway. The race continued with a great restart involving leaders Adam Florian and Travis Wall side by side before Florian prevailed with the race lead. A late race caution brought things to a halt, setting up a GWC finish and from there, Florian was able to hit all his marks enroute to another Pro Six division win at Larry King Laws Langley Speedway. Florian from Victory Lane, “Just the same thing like the last race, he’s (Travis Wall) is right there with us, were all so close in this division”, claimed Florian. “Gotta thank my brother on the radio, my dad, Tommy Spencer, it’s a group effort. We all work hard on this thing, day in, day out and it shows itself here”.

Bojangles Enduros 30 Laps: Mike Joyner would get to start on pole by way of the pill draw. Twenty three Enduros took the green flag when the race began and emerging with the lead out of turn two would be Mike Joyner. Wasn’t long into the race before the leader mounted up a sizable race lead while the field on back beat and banged. Nick Deans, Rodney Davis and Justin Fansler were the early movers in the feature but neither were able to close in on the leader. At the halfway, Joyner continued to lead, avoiding the miscues and getting through the traffic. The Enduro division dominate Alex Floroff who started eighteenth in the grid would work his way to fourth as the race entered the latter stages. But it was all Mike Joyner from the pole, leading every lap to win the Enduro race feature. Joyner from Victory Lane, “It’s a brand new race car, me and my buddy Justin, he probably did ninety percent of the work on it”, shared Mike Joyner. “I want to thank the Lord Jesus Christ first and for most, he’s always looked out for me and I’m always praying. It was fun, this was a lot of fun too and it been a long time, my buddy Patrick. I talked to him this morning, he used to help me and I told him that I was going to get him a winning trophy seven years ago. So, I got it for him tonight and I’m gonna send it to you Patrick”.
