More Than 12,000 DFW Elementary Students Compete To Design Paint Schemes for Lionel Racing

More than 12,000 students at the 21 Dallas/Fort Worth elementary schools participating in Texas Motor Speedway’s Speeding To Read program showcased their artistic talents this week with the opportunity to have their work featured in Lionel Racing’s NASCAR die-cast line that will be available at major retailers nationwide.

Lionel Racing, the “Official Die-Cast of NASCAR,” sponsored a week-long contest for the fourth consecutive year where students will design their own fantasy stock car paint scheme, similar to those in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series™, along with a brief essay outlining the thought behind the artwork.

Winners will be selected in both the KG-2nd and 3rd-6th grade divisions and each will receive an actual 1:24 scale, hood-opening, trunk-opening die-cast with their paint scheme presented to them in an acrylic case during a school assembly coinciding with April’s O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 NASCAR doubleheader race week at Texas Motor Speedway. The two winners also will receive four tickets each to the O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race on Sunday, April 8.

The overall winning design among those two students will have the distinction of having their paint scheme added to Lionel Racing’s commercial NASCAR Authentics line that will be available at various national retailers including Walmart, Target, Toys “R” Us, and more. Lionel Racing also will celebrate the winner at their respective school by providing every student and faculty member with that die-cast as a memento of the accomplishment at a later date.

The 21 Speeding To Read schools, which represent six of the 25 largest districts in the Metroplex, are B.B. Owen (Lewisville ISD), Black Elementary (Mesquite), Brent (Little Elm), Cannaday (Mesquite), Carter Park (Fort Worth), Diamond Hill (Fort Worth), Tom C. Gooch (Dallas), J.A. Hargrave (Crowley), Henrie (Mesquite), Homestead (Lewisville), Hughes (Northwest), Lakeview (Northwest), Manuel Jara (Fort Worth), Marsalis (Dallas), McAuliffe (Lewisville), Peters Colony (Lewisville), E.P. Rayzor (Denton), Seven Hills (Northwest), Shands (Mesquite), Stewart’s Creek (Lewisville) and Vickery (Lewisville).

Students will produce their fantasy paint scheme on a car template sheet that consists of side and overhead view of the stock car, as seen in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. Each school will vote on and submit their top design in grade categories K-2 and 3-6 to Texas Motor Speedway, where speedway officials and Lionel Racing will determine the winners. The designs will be judged on originality, incorporating reading and/or school elements into the design, having an orderly appearance that can be transferred to an authentic die-cast, and the essay behind the theme.

“Speeding To Read is one of those programs that our team at Lionel Racing looks forward to each year,” said Howard Hitchcock, President of Lionel. “We are always incredibly impressed with the students’ die-cast designs and we can’t wait to see what paint schemes the students create and the stories behind them.”

Lionel Racing is among the proud partners of Texas Motor Speedway’s Speeding To Read program that also includes Speedway Children’s Charities-Texas, NASCAR, Verizon IndyCar Series, Speedway World, Levy Restaurants, The Speedway Club, aai Trophies and Awards of Plano, Woolley’s Frozen Custard and Team Texas High Performance Driving School.
