South Boston Speedway Points Leaders Looking Over Their Shoulders As 2017 Seasons Heads Into Second Half

At the halfway point of South Boston Speedway’s 2017 season Peyton Sellers, Trey Crews, Harrison Walker and Tyler Crute are the division points leaders, but none have the luxury of relaxing through the final half of the schedule.

 

Headed into Saturday night’s Southern Virginia Higher Education Center NASCAR Late Model Twin 75s, Sellers is the leader of the Late Model Stock Division, Crews leads the Limited Sportsman Division, Walker is atop the Budweiser Pure Stock Division and Crute is out front in the Budweiser Hornets Division.

 

The consistent Sellers has used a pair of wins and seven top-5 finishes to amass almost a 60-point lead over Austin Thaxton. Sellers has 334 points at the halfway point of the season while Thaxton has 265. Behind Thaxton there is a logjam with Bobby McCarty third at 248 points followed by Brandon Pierce with 246, Philip Morris, 239, and Danny Willis Jr. with 232.

 

Morris leads in Late Model wins with three. McCarty and Sellers have two each and Thaxton one.

 

None of the mid-season points leaders should get too comfortable, though. The passing points system utilized by South Boston gives anyone within striking distance of the lead the ability to catch up.

The passing points system allows drivers to receive bonus points for each position gained during a race. Drivers have the option to put themselves in position to pick up maximum points by dropping back in the field from their qualifying positions before the race takes the green flag.

 

Sellers did not have a win in 2016, but by using the passing points system to perfection, he was able to stay close to eventual track champion Matt Bowling, finishing second in the points.

 

Crews has put together a solid season so far in the Limited Sportsman Division for a 22-point lead over David Latour Jr., 284-262. Colin Garret is third with 253 points. Latour won the season-opener, but since then Crews has posted three wins and Garrett two.

 

Walker has rolled up three Budweiser Pure Stock wins while building a 254-226 lead over Johnny Layne. Layne hasn’t won this year, but has been consistent, with an average finish of 4.5. Quincy Adkins, who has one win, is just four points behind Layne while Randy Hupp is fourth with 217 points.

 

Crute has dominated the Budweiser Hornets Division with four wins, but he hasn’t been able to pull away from Kevin Currin, who has not finished out of the top five all season. Crute leads the division with 276 points, ahead of Currins’s 262.

 

The points battle will be wide open in all divisions this Saturday night in the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center NASCAR Late Model Twin 75s.

 

In addition to twin 75-lap races for the Late Models, there will be twin 25-lap events for the Limited Sportsman Division, a 30-lapper for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division and a 15-lap race for the Budweiser Hornets Division.

 

Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for youth ages 7-12. Kids six and under are admitted free.

 

Grandstand gates open at 5:30 with the green flag flying at 7 p.m.
