Media Mayhem Rocks Next Tuesday’s Summer Shootout

Area media members will share the spotlight with rising racing stars of all ages when the Bojangles’ Summer Shootout continues Tuesday with the captivating Media Mayhem school bus slobberknocker joining Legend Cars and Bandoleros on Charlotte Motor Speedway’s frontstretch quarter-mile.

Six members of local television stations trade suits and ties for firesuits and helmets in the winner-take-all, 10-ton tussle for Media Mayhem glory. It’s a bumper-banging, low-speed, high-energy show no fan can afford to miss.

This year’s field includes:

  • David Baxter, Cabarrus County Channel 22
  • Nick Carboni, WCNC
  • Al Conklin, WBTV
  • Matthew East, Spectrum News
  • Derek James, WCCB
  • Josh Sims, WJZY

“My leading laps and winning has become so routine that’s it’s almost mundane to the outside viewer,” Matthew East said in a boastful challenge to his competitors. “But beating these guys never gets boring to me, and I will try to let them be close enough to me to give the appearance of a competitive race.”

Competition is exactly what drives Al Conklin – who, like East, is a past winner of the showcase of excitement that makes up Media Mayhem.

“Like thunderstorms, dripping humidity and pesky mosquitoes, running the buses in the Bojangles’ Summer Shootout is always on my late-June schedule,” Conklin said. “I’m really looking forward to competing again and hope to bring back my third championship trophy. I can only hope I don’t inherit a clunker or fall victim to some judge inverting the field with me way out ahead.”

Gates open at 5 p.m. with racing beginning at approximately 7 p.m.
