While there is much anticipation for Talladega Superspeedway’s upcoming October NASCAR playoff weekend Oct.13-15, which will feature Dale Earnhardt Jr’s final start at the 2.66-mile venue, the mammoth track announced today its 2018 event schedule, one with dates that are all too familiar with fans.
For the first time since 2011, Talladega Superspeedway’s complete spring event weekend will take place in the beautiful month of April (27-29), moving just one week back from this season, and then returning in the fall for a NASCAR Playoff “Wildcard Weekend” in mid-October (12-14). The track’s full spring weekend has been in the month of April a total of 14 years, including a five-year stretch from 2007-2011, since the superspeedway began hosting spring events in 1970.
The GEICO 500 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (MENCS) race on Sunday, April 29, 2018, will serve as the anchor event of the weekend, which will also consist of the Sparks Energy 300 NASCAR XFINITY Series (NXS) 300-miler on Saturday, April 28. The General Tire 200 ARCA Racing Series Presented by Menards event will kick things off on Friday, April 27.
In the fall of ‘18, NASCAR’s Playoffs return to the Most Competitive track on the planet with the running of the Alabama 500 for the MENCS on Sunday, Oct. 14 and the fred’s 250 Powered by Coca-Cola for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) on Saturday, Oct. 13. Like this season, next year’s Alabama 500 will be the second event in the second round of the MENCS playoffs, while the fred’s 250 Powered by Coca-Cola will be the third and deciding race of the first round of the NCWTS playoffs.
“We are thrilled to have similar race dates for the 2018 season – April 27-29 & October 12-14 – as it helps our fans who have been here in the past easily plan their return to the greatest track on the planet,” said Talladega Superspeedway Chairman Grant Lynch. “For many years, we have generally had the last weekend in April or the first in May for our spring races. It’s a great time of year, and in October, there is nothing like feeling the autumn breeze. Our current fans, and those who haven’t visited us before, can clear their calendars now for 2018, as well as for our fall event weekend coming up later this year.”
