With season nearly played out, Championship still up for Grabs

The second-to-last race of the season will take place this Friday, Aug. 12 at Kingsport Speedway.

Each season, Kingsport Speedway sets aside a night to reflect on the lives and careers of racers who have passed away. Friday night’s Tribute Race will do just that.

With only two events remaining, the pressure to gain precious last-minute championship points is higher than it has been all season.

Late Model Stock Car division standings remain the closest battle overall. With 16 races in the books so far, the division still has three races to go this season to get to the magic number of 18 for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national standings.

Following post-race controversy last week, both Zeke Shell and Kres VanDyke faced penalties and were docked valuable championship points.

With those penalties, the championship hunt experienced a shuffle at the top. Defending track champion Ronnie McCarty now finds himself at the top of the standings. In second place is Zeke Shell, holding back by only one point.

Wayne Hale sits in fourth place at only eight points behind. Now in fourth place is 2014 track champion Kres VanDyke, behind 10 points and still in contention.

Chris Tunnell and Paul Shull are continuing to have a close run to the end. Tunnell gained one point on Shull last week, extending his lead from one to two points.

Billy Byington remains at the top of the leaderboard in the Pure 4 division. Byington now holds the lead by 52 points over his car owner Kenny Absher. To clinch the title, Byington only needs to start Friday’s race.

Kevin Canter holds a 21-point lead over Jerry Miller, leaving the Mod 4 championship still up in the air.

Marty Tunnell and Dennis Arnold lead the Pure Street standings. Tunnell holds atop the standings by 18 points over Arnold.

Friday’s event is also Back to School Night. While supplies last, kids will receive free school supplies from NASCAR Acceleration Nation. Precision Electrical Co. is also providing an inflatable bounce house for kids to enjoy.

Grandstands open Friday at 5:30 p.m., qualifying begins at 7 p.m. and racing gets underway at 8 p.m.

Adult grandstand admission is $10 and children 12-and-under are admitted free. Tier parking along Turns 3 and 4 is available for $10 per vehicle plus admission.
