Darlington Raceway show Palmentto pride with national anthem performers

It’s one of the most popular questions a race fan will ask, “Who’s performing the national anthem for the Bojangles’ Southern 500?”  Well, ask no more Darlington Raceway fans!

Miss South Carolina, Brooke Mosteller is sure to wow the crowd as she performs our national anthem prior to the start of the Bojangles’ Southern 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Saturday night, April 12! And for those of you wondering about Friday night’s VFW Sport Clips Help A Hero 200 NASCAR Nationwide Series anthem, we’ll hear the Coker College Men’s Vocal Ensemble, led by associate professor of music Dr. William Carswell.

“We love being able to bring a local connection to the pre-race ceremonies at Darlington Raceway,” said track president Chip Wile. “Brooke [Mosteller] is a fantastic ambassador for the state of South Carolina and Dr. Carswell is an accomplished professor and educator. Both are making a difference in our community by using their talents and passion to guide students down a path of higher education. It is an honor to have them join us for our pre-race festivities.”

Mosteller, a native of Mount Pleasant, SC and 2012 honors graduate at Furman University, was crowned Miss South Carolina in July 2013. As a founding student of the “Go Higher: College Application Day” program, Mosteller closely worked with the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education to offer actual application sessions to assist high school seniors with the college application process. With Mosteller’s assistance, approximately 40,000 students in more than 180 South Carolina high schools applied to college this past fall through this initiative.

Dr. Carswell serves as the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs and Associate Professor of Music at Coker College, located just 12 miles from Darlington Raceway. Under his direction, nine members of the Men’s Vocal Ensemble will perform Friday night’s Anthem. He received the Excellence in Teaching Award from South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities in 2010 and has led Coker College ensembles at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the United States Capitol Rotunda in Washington, DC, as well as the Koger Center for the Performing Arts in Columbia, SC, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall.
