On the questionnaire he filled out for his driver bio David Mayhew listed “racing just about everything” under hobbies and other interests.
He wasn’t lying. His racing interest ranges from 1/10th-scale RC (radio-controlled) cars to NASCAR, in which he has been a regular in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West since 2007. He has also made NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, NASCAR Nationwide Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts along the way.
Mayhew is making back-to-back trips from his home in Bakersfield, Calif., to Florida this winter to compete in both avenues of racing. He recently traveled to Orlando to compete in the Snowbird Nationals, which he termed as one of the biggest RC races in the world.
Now, Mayhew is preparing to head to Daytona International Speedway with his NASCAR K&N Pro Series West team to compete in the inaugural UNOH Battle At The Beach on Feb. 18 and 19. The non-points event will be held on a .4-mile oval on the backstretch at DIS.
The NASCAR K&N Pro Series competition will be just one component of this first-time event that has been added to the Speedweeks menu at the “World Center of Racing.” The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Models will have qualifying races and a 150-lap feature on Monday, Feb. 18 while the action on Tuesday, Feb. 19 will include a similar schedule of qualifying races and 150-lap races for both the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tours and NASCAR K&N Pro Series.
With a win in the 2012 season opener for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West at Phoenix International Raceway, Mayhew secured the first locked-in spot in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series race. Drivers, who won touring series races and championships in 2012, secured locked-in positions for their respective features in the prestigious event. All others must qualify through the heat races.
“I’m really looking forward just to get back in the race car and turning some laps,” said Mayhew, who drives the No. 17 MMI Services/Ron’s Rear Ends Chevrolet for car owner Steve McGowan. “We’re not sure what to expect with the track, but I’m sure it will be good and fun to race on. Just being in Daytona is going to be a good experience.”
Mayhew has experienced success at nearly every level in which he has competed. He had a top-10 finish in his only race in the NASCAR Nationwide Series and has a pole, two top-five and four top-10 finishes in 13 outings in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. As a regular in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West, Mayhew has four wins, eight poles, 31 top-five and 49 top-10 finishes in 67 races. He finished second in the championship standings in 2010 and placed fifth last season.
