Old Dominion Speedway announces closing of original speedway in Manassas

Thank you to all of our Fans, Sponsors, Racers & Employees for 65 years of pure joy. We will fondly remember you and the great celebration of life we enjoyed at Old Dominion Speedway.

Who would have known that what started as a weekend race activity for family and friends in a farmer’s field in 1948 would eventually lead to so much for so many. That historical beginning in dirt was transformed when the Gore family purchased the assets of Longview Speedway in 1951. What the Gore family constructed from 1951-1955 was a revolutionary state of the art motorsports facility for its day.

Old Dominion Speedway combined the East Coasts first drag strip with a paved lighted banked oval track. It wasn’t just forward thinking it was simply a brilliant concept and execution. Those elements perfectly laid out on 40 acres of land in Manassas, VA so carefully placed that they worked perfectly without modification for the next 60 years.

The history that followed is astounding and voluminous; there isn’t space here to do it justice. Isn’t it true even to this day that no matter what your motorsports interests were you could find it at this remarkable place. This history while significant in so many ways isn’t the Legacy. The Legacy lives with us, our memories, the joy we received, the people we met, the competitors that raced here and the sport we all enjoyed so much at this great place. Facilities are simply bricks and mortar; it’s the people that mean so much. That’s the real story of Old Dominion and its fabulous history that will live on forever.

As we announce today the closing of Old Dominion Speedway we especially remember all of the Great Racers, the long-term Sponsors, the Employees many of whom have been there for over 30 years, the Owners and the great Fans. All of us gave so freely for 65 years because we loved Old Dominion and we received so much more than we gave because of all of us.

We certainly will miss you Old Dominion Speedway!!!!
