Boat Leads Four Toyotas Into Top Five at Lawrenceburg in USAC Indiana Midget Week

Chad Boat charged from 15th to second as Toyota drivers captured four of the top five finishing positions at Lawrenceburg Speedway on night five of the USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget Series’ Indiana Midget Week.

With Logan Seavey finishing third behind Boat, Toyota-powered drivers have captured 11 top-three podium finishes through the first five Indiana Midget Week races. 

Saturday night’s event saw Shane Golobic take the lead on the opening lap, with Tyler Courtney running second, followed by Cannon McIntosh, Justin Grant, Kevin Thomas Jr. and Seavey. Courtney would overtake Golobic a lap later, while the 16-year-old McIntosh remained third.

After a caution on lap six, Boat was able to move up from the 15th starting position into the top five and then climbed into third behind Windom and Courtney on lap nine. McIntosh sat fourth and Seavey had risen up to the fifth spot.

By the midway point of the 30-lap race, Seavey had overtaken both McIntosh and Boat for third and passed Courtney for second on lap 16, setting his sights on the leader Windom. After a lap 22 caution, Seavey began to close on Windom, with McIntosh moving back into the top three, followed by Tanner Thorson who diced his way through the field after starting 17th.

Looking for his second win of the week, Seavey made his move on lap 27, throwing a huge slider on Windom heading into turn one to take the lead and was able to hold it as the lead duo came back to the flag stand, only to have the caution flag wave, reverting the field back to the previous lap’s order with Seavey moved back to second.

Windom led the field back to green for a three-lap dash to the finish with Seavey running second, with Thorson, McIntosh and Boat rounding out the top five. Seavey once again closed on Windom, while Boat climbed up to third on lap 29. As they took the white flag, Seavey appeared to jump the cushion, opening the door for Boat to steal away second behind Windom. Seavey held on to third, followed by Thorson and McIntosh. Zach Daum finished sixth, while Brady Bacon was eighth, Thomas Jr. ninth and Jerry Coons was tenth, giving Toyota eight of the top 10 finishers.

“The last restart was really good for us,” said Boat afterward. “I have to thank Pristine Auction, KC Drywall, Toyota and TRD for all their support. We were third last night, second tonight and, hopefully, we can win tomorrow night. The fans saw a great show tonight and there will be another good one tomorrow.”

Seavey will take a 36-point lead into Sunday’s event and can clinch the Indiana Midget Week title with a top-10 finish.

“This car has been consistently fast this week,” said Seavey, who has earned a win, two seconds and third. “I should have won four races this week. We had the lead the one time and the caution came out. We’ve got a little bit of points lead for the week and we’re starting to close the gap for the overall points lead. Now we’ve got to finish it off tomorrow.

USAC Indiana Midget Week closes out at Kokomo Speedway on Sunday.
