Engine issues mar strong effort from Gus Dean; GREE Racing at Charlotte

After matching his career-best ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards qualifying effort Thursday afternoon at Charlotte Motor Speedway, GREE Racing driver Gus Dean (@gusdean) chances for a strong finish were spoiled after experience engine issues late in the General Tire 150.

Running inside the top-five early in the sixth race of the season, the Bluffton, S.C. native maintained his presence near the front of the field, despite battling an unbalanced No. 32 GREE Cooling Products | Baker Distributing Chevrolet SS.

Crew chief Jamie Jones made an adjustment to Dean’s Chevrolet during the first round of pit stops at Lap 24, but after losing a couple positions on pit road, the 23-year-old found himself in aero traffic trying to make his march back through the field.

Hovered inside the top-10 until making his final pit stop inside the final 40 laps of the race. While restarting 12th, Dean hustled back inside the top-10 and found himself sixth before his engine appeared to lose a cylinder – causing the No. 32 GREE Cooling Products | Baker Distributing Chevrolet to lose power at critical points on the race track.

Despite his best effort to notch his second top-10 finish of the season, the reduction in horsepower left Dean 14th in the final rundown.

The effort was Dean’s third top-15 finish of 2018 and fifth top-20 overall.

Gus Dean Quote: “Just can’t catch a break man. I mean Jamie Jones, Kevin Cywinski (Win-Tron Racing car owner) brought me a really fast No. 32 GREE Cooling Products | Baker Distributing Chevrolet.

“I was thought it was going to be a really good night, but it just wasn’t meant to be.

“We’ve endured everything we possibly can this season when it comes to bad luck. Speed hasn’t been a problem. We’ve had fast race cars – just no luck. Luck is half the battle.

“We’ll regroup and head to Pocono Raceway next week – one of my favorite places on the schedule and hopefully get our season back on track where it belongs.

“I can promise you this, when our luck turns, we’re going to be winning races this season.” Next Up: General Tire #AnywhereIsPossible 200 at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway on Fri., June 1 live on FS2.
