MDM Motorsports NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Review: Bristol Motor Speedway

MDM Motorsports and driver Harrison Burton earned their first victory together on Saturday at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway. The win was Burton’s first career NASCAR K&N Pro Series East win.

Burton, 16, started the rain-shortened race from the pole position after qualifying was canceled due to rain and the lineup was set by 2016 final owner point standings. He dominated until the rain hit, leading 68 of the 70 laps completed.

Teammate Sheldon Creed, making his Bristol Motor Speedway debut, started second and ran inside the top-10 most of the day before finishing 11th. Vinnie Miller started third and ran inside the top five before contact with another competitor resulted in a spin. Miller rallied back to finish 16th.

Harrison Burton, driver of the DEX Imaging No. 12… Burton entered Saturday’s NKNPSE Zombie Auto 125 with a pair of fourth-place finishes to start the season, as well as a pole at New Smyrna (Fla.) Speedway in the season opener. For the second consecutive year at Bristol, Burton led the field to green.  He went on to lead 68 of the 70-lap rain shortened event to earn his first-career NKNPSE victory. Burton now leads the series standings.

Harrison Burton on Bristol: “Winning at a place like Bristol is special. It’s one of those racetracks that you want to win at no matter what series you’re racing. For the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East, this is one of our big races and a race that we all have circled on the calendar. I felt like last year we had a shot at winning before we had a mechanical failure. This year, my guys at MDM Motorsports brought me an even better car. I just needed to do my job and close the deal. It’s nice to get that done.”

Sheldon Creed, driver of the A.M. Ortega Construction No. 40… Creed made his Bristol Motor Speedway debut in Saturday’s rain shortened Zombie Auto 125. After starting second, he ran inside the top-10 for the majority of the event. When the rain began to fall, however, he was in the 11th position, where he ultimately finished.

Sheldon Creed on Bristol: “For this being my first time at Bristol, I’m happy. I think we had a better car than where we finished but that’s racing. This is a difficult place, but my team really helped me get comfortable quickly. We have definitely run better this year than our results would indicate but we’ll keep digging and go to the next one. I can’t thank AM Ortega Construction and United Rentals enough for their support.”

Vinnie Miller, driver of the Master Mfg. Inc., No. 41… Miller, like his teammate, made his Bristol Motor Speedway debut on Saturday. He started third, after rain canceled qualifying, and remained inside the top five early in the race. On a restart, contact from another car sent the No. 41  spinning in turn three. Miller  was able to keep the  car from making contact with the wall. He started at  the rear of the field and rallied to 16th where he eventually finished.

Vinnie Miller on Bristol: “Bristol is a tough race track, but I feel like I learned a lot this weekend. The  MDM Motorsports team brought a great No. 41 Master Mfg. Inc., Toyota Camry and we were just settling in and running laps prior to getting spun. After restarting at  the rear, we were just playing catch up the rest of the day. If the rain wouldn’t have come, I think we could’ve battled for a top-10, if not a top-five finish. Although the result was disappointing, I think overall the weekend was positive. I’m looking forward to South Boston in a couple weeks.”

The NKNPSE Zombie Auto 125 is scheduled to air on NBCSN, on Thursday, April 27 at 11 p.m., ET.
