Brakes Stop Giovanni Bromante’s Nashville Run

Giovanni Bromante was making another charge to the front in Sunday’s pro late model event at Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville until brake issues slowed the No. 98 Sandler Capital Toyota. Despite the lack of stopping power, Giovanni still nursed his car home in the 14th position after the 100-lap contest.

Visiting the third new track in his first three starts in a pro late model, Giovanni and the David Gilliland Racing crew spent most of the day Saturday getting the driver familiar with the treacherous and intimidating high banks of Nashville. After a number of runs, Giovanni was getting quicker each time out and ultimately broke into the top ten fastest cars before the end of practice, a stout accomplishment with nearly 30 cars on the grounds.

During raceday on Sunday, conditions changed from Saturday night but the DGR team and Bromante were ready for whatever circumstances were thrown at them. Giovanni rolled out in the middle of the qualifying group for his first qualifying attempt at the Fairgrounds. A miscue on his two-lap run slowed both of his laps and forced Giovanni to start from outside the top twenty.

In what quickly is becoming his trademark, Bromante began slicing his way through the field toward the front. While working his way to what appeared to be another top ten finish, Bromante keyed the radio and explained that the brakes on his No. 98 were beginning to fade. Unable to do much from the driver’s seat, Bromante was forced to slow on-track to compensate for the reduced braking potential and faded to a 14th place finish, one lap down to the leader.

“The track was challenging for me when we first rolled out of the trailer,” Bromante explained about his weekend in Nashville. “But it’s very fast and I always have liked fast. I wasn’t happy with where I qualified, but I knew we could get up front before the race was over. We were riding and working our way up there when the brakes began to fight me. It’s really disappointing because my DGR guys worked so hard to give me one of the best cars out there. I learned a lot this weekend if nothing else, and we’ll go to the next one that much stronger.”

Giovanni’s next race with DGR is scheduled to be at Montgomery Motor Speedway, a track where he opened the season, on Saturday, April 22.
