Quin Houff made his hometown fans proud by returning to Virginia in the CARS Tour Duels at Dominion on Saturday and bringing home a pair of fourth place finishes. It was Quin’s final super late model race before his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut at Bristol Motor Speedway next month.
Houff started the first duel race, a 75-lap contest, in sixth. He was mired in a three-way fight for third during most of the race until a late-race caution set up a restart inside of 20 laps to go. The restart allowed Quin to battle with Christian Eckes and the two made contact just a pair of laps following the restart resulting in Quin losing control briefly before righting the machine and bringing out another yellow. After racing resumed, Quin was able to claw his way back to a fourth place finish.
Between races, the Anthony Campi Racing team discovered both of Quin’s right side tires were flat or otherwise leaking air. CARS officials permitted them to change the tires, but once Quin got up to speed in the second race, it was apparent the right side tires were not as agreeable with the lefts as the original pair. Despite the handling issue, Quin fought for the entire 75-lap distance, ultimately finishing fourth again in the second duel of the afternoon.
“After we made contact with Eckes, I had two tires going flat along with some cosmetic damage to the car,” Houff explained after the race. “So, for the final 20 laps or so of the first race, I had to drive through it and get all I could. The guys did a great job getting everything fixed the best way possible, but the car just didn’t take well to the new right side tires in the second race. It was a team effort and we got all we could get. I was hoping for a little better day, but you cannot complain when you come home with a brand new car in one piece and some solid finishes.”
It was also Quin’s first race with Anthony Campi Racing, a powerhouse team in Florida who is branching out to various regions as various drivers, like Quin, have requested.
“For the circumstances given to us, ACR did a great job,” complimented Quin when asked about his overall satisfaction with the weekend. “Neither of us had ever been to Dominion, we had never worked together, had never even seen the racetrack, and had a brand new racecar that had never seen a racetrack itself. We worked well together and made big gains all weekend and can’t complain coming home with the car in one piece and a pair of fourth place finishes. I can’t say enough about the ACR guys for coming all the way from Florida to Virginia and all the hours they worked. I also have to thank Matt Horowitz CPA for supporting us and all the family and friends who showed up to watch me race. Now it’s time to get focused on Xfinity racing at Bristol and Richmond.”
Quin’s NASCAR Xfinity Series debut is April 22 and Bristol Motor Speedway in the Fitzgerald Glider Kits 300. He will also be in action the following weekend at Richmond International Raceway and both races will be in cars fielded by Precision Performance Motorsports.
