Cole Anderson Shows Speed in New Smyrna Before Race Ending Accident

After qualifying second fastest, Cole Anderson and the Anthony Campi Racing team ended Saturday night’s race at New Smyrna Speedway in the garage following a mid-race incident where the No. 97 was a victim of circumstances. After the accident, the team was credited with a 13th place finish.

Anderson and crew unloaded their No. 97 car with a healthy amount of speed at a track where they last raced in February during Speedweeks. The speed continued during qualifying when Cole clocked in second-fastest in time trials, yet was forced to start seventh due to an invert used by the track. Early in the race, Anderson dropped back slightly, waiting for the car and the race to come in. As the temperatures built, he quickly made his way to the front, tracking behind leader Stephen Nasse early in the race.

A mid-race restart spelled the demise for the No. 97 Toyota. Entering turn three, Anderson and another competitor made contact, sending his car out of control and into the outside wall. The damage was unrepairable at the track and the team was forced to retire from the race.

“We struggled just a little bit with this result, but I know my guys will bring another fast piece for the Governor’s Cup in two weeks,” Anderson said after the race. “Overall, the weekend itself was good, we tried new things here and there and found out what worked and what didn’t. It’s nice coming to these tune-up races just to see what you’ve got before the big event.”

Anderson’s next race will be in two weeks in the Governor’s Cup 200, a race paying $15,000 to win for 200 laps around the half-mile New Smyrna Speedway. Practice hits the speedway on Friday, November 11, with other pre-race activity such as qualifying on Saturday and racing on Sunday.
