The ARCA Racing Series had group qualifying for the first time at the Daytona International Speedway. The group qualifying format consisted of seven drivers in groups of seven based on their times from both practice sessions. A total of 49 drivers posted times.
For the first time since 1997 at the Michigan International Speedway, Mark Thompson will start on the pole. Thompson posted a time of 48.042 seconds, 187.336 mph. while qualifying in the fourth group. The 64-year old driver from Georgia will aim for his third career ARCA victory.
Cody Coughlin, driving one of the four Venturini Motorsports Toyota’s, will start the Lucas Oil 200 from the outside pole. Caughlin earned the second starting spot by going out in the fourth qualifying group. The 19-year old will make his 12th ARCA start of his career as he continues to seek his first career victory.
Starting from the third spot will be Tom Hessert after positing his fastest time in the sixth group. Hessert posted a lap of 48.084 seconds, 187.172 mph. in his No. 77 Barbera’s Autoland Dodge for Cunningham Motorsports. He makes his 140th career ARCA start on Saturday as he looks to score his sixth career victory.
Last year’s winner, Grant Enfinger, comes into the season opener with GMS Racing. Enfinger will start from 13th after a lap of 48.452 seconds, 185.751 mph. in his No. 23 Alamo Rent-A-Car Chevrolet.
Mason Mitchell, who captured the 2014 ARCA Racing Series championship, will roll from the 23rd starting spot. Saturday’s Lucas Oil 200 marks his 45th career start in the series and looks to score his second career victory. Mitchell’s teammate, Austin Wayne Self, will start the event a little further back. Self posted the 27th fastest lap of the session.
