Ruston shows promise before late race misfortune

Kenzie Ruston finished twelfth after running in third with seven laps remaining in the JEGS 150 at Columbus Motor Speedway on Saturday, July 19. Late race contact with series points leader Ben Rhodes would send Ruston to the end of the lead lap cars for the final restart.

Ruston started the event from the fourteenth position, and made steady progress through the field after thirty laps. “I couldn’t believe how fast my car was tonight,” said Ruston. “I wish I would have tried the high line a little sooner, we could have probably got to the front sooner. I was as surprised as my crew chief was that we could race up there.

When asked about the contact from Rhodes, Ruston was straight to the point. “I race everyone like they race me,” Ruston said. “Ben and I have raced clean in the past and I’m not sure what happened tonight. It was disappointing, we had a top-5 finish in our sights, maybe even a win, and it was taken away there at the end.”

“Kenzie drove another great race,” said Crew Chief Mike Fritts. “She showed everyone what she can do with a fast car, and its just another one of those things that happened out of our control that robbed us of a finish we earned. We’ll bring a strong car to Iowa Speedway in a couple weeks, and try to give her another shot at Victory Lane like she had tonight.”
