For the penultimate intermediate track of the season, Young’s Motorsports Tyler Young will return to the No. 02 Young Building Systems / Randco. Chevrolet Silverado for Friday night’s Longhorn 350 at Texas Motor Speedway.
Stepping aside to let young-guns Dylan Lupton and Austin Theriault leave their mark on the tour the past two races at Talladega Superspeedway and Martinsville Speedway, Young is ready to saddle up at his hometown track and secure his third top-10 finish of the season.
“I always enjoy going back to Texas,” said Young. “It’s a special place to me being my home track and all, but we’d sure like to come out of Friday’s race with a good run to carry us to the end of the season.”
Young, a native of Midland, Texas is poised to make his eighth start at the 1.5-mile speedway with hopes of betting his previous track best of 14th matched in back-to-back races in the fall of 2014 and spring of 2015. On Friday night, Young wants more than a 14th place finish – he’d like his first top-10 run in front of family and friends.
“We missed it here in June,” said Young talking about his 21st place finish. “But, Andrew (Abbott, crew chief) and the guys have been busting their tails to work on the truck and we feel really confident that we’re going to Texas this weekend and we’ll not only have some speed, but we’ll be a contender too.
“Texas is a fast place, where handling and speed are just as equally crucial. You need to have a truck that can maneuver through the bumps, but also carry the speed on the exit of the corners to haul you down the straightaways. Like at most of these big tracks, the draft will be a big factor and we’ll try to use that to our advantage too.”
With practice set on Thursday this week, the day before Friday’s Longhorn 350, the conditions will be vastly different from day to night, but Young says his team has combated that situation before and are ready to do so again.
“When you practice during the day and race at night, it surely prevents some challenges,” said Young who will make his 14th start of the season Friday night. “You may not see us or the other teams put a lot of concentration towards the first practice, but we will during the second practice as conditions will be similar to qualifying for Friday and a little closer to the race.
“We’ve been in this situation before so we know how to adapt.”
With only three races remaining on the calendar this season, Young who has run 13 of the 20 races thus far is hopeful to execute with more strong finishes and build towards 2017.
“We’re working hard on 2017 and hope to announce something soon,” added Young. “In the meantime, I’m focused on doing what I need to do both in and out of the truck – and my guys are resilient. They want Young’s Motorsports to be successful too, so we’ll just keep digging and hope that hard work and a little bit of luck pay off with good results for the rest of the year.”
Young aboard the No. 02 Young’s Building Systems / Randco Chevrolet Silverado will make his 70th career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start at Texas Motor Speedway. In 69 previous races, Young has earned a best finish of sixth at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in February 2016.
