Gallagher battles for 17th place finish in Eldora debut

The first dirt racing experience for Spencer Gallagher, driver of the No. 23 Allegiant Travel Chevrolet, in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) resulted in a 17th-place finish at the hallowed Eldora Speedway. Following his Eldora debut, Gallagher sits ninth in NCWTS points after 11 of 23 races.

Gallagher started from the outside of row three in his qualifying race, where he transferred straight to the 154-lap Mud Summer Classic by virtue of a fourth-place finish. Once the green flag dropped on the NCWTS’ third-annual trek to Eldora, Gallagher found himself in a quest to find rear grip and side bite on corner exit. During the first competition caution period, crew chief Jeff Stankiewicz made air pressure and spring adjustments to Gallagher’s Allegiant Travel Chevrolet. However, Gallagher continued to fight a lack of forward bite.

Through the race’s second segment, Gallagher raced for position inside the top-20 battling the same balance woes. Under the second competition caution, he came to pit road for further adjustments, which included three shock adjustments to improve the persistent struggles with forward bite. The Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender escaped two spins without significant damage, managed to stay on the lead lap, and took advantage of the Green-White-Checkered finish to advance his position and earned a 17th-place finish behind the race winner, Christopher Bell.

Gallagher and the Allegiant Travel team sit ninth in points as the NCWTS heads to Pocono (Pa.) Raceway for the 12th event of the 2015 campaign on Saturday, August 1st.

SPENCER GALLAGHER QUOTE:
“All throughout the day we fought a lack of drive off the corners and side bite. Unfortunately, those issues carried over into the race and we never could get the track position to run towards the top-10. (Crew chief) Jeff (Stankiewicz) and the Allegiant Travel team made all kinds of adjustments to find the speed we needed. We fought hard all race, and picked up a few spots on the last couple restarts. Every point is critical, and I’m proud of this GMS Racing team for digging all night. We’ll head to Pocono (Raceway) where I have a little more experience and hopefully have a solid run there.”
