Dakoda Armstrong Kentucky Speedway Post Race Report

After a few weeks away from the track, the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series returned to action Thursday night at Kentucky Speedway for the UNOH 225. A drastic swing in track temps from practice to qualifying and the 150-lap main event brought big changes in the handling condition of the No. 60 WinField Silverado. An untimely caution and mismatched set of tires just past halfway threw a wrench into the night for Turn One Racing, but Armstrong was able to gain valuable positions in the closing laps to capture a 21st place finish.

Starting from the 21st position, Armstrong made steady improvement and pushed towards the top-15 before the first caution on lap 25. Crew chief Gere Kennon made the decision to take fuel only, giving Armstrong needed track position and allowing him to restart in the ninth position. Though fresher tires on other competitors’ trucks prevailed, the WinField Chevy remained in contention until the next stop.

Coming to pit road for a routine stop on lap 80, Armstrong was set to rejoin the field with fresh tires when the caution flag flew just after the completion of his pit stop. The timing of the caution put Armstrong two laps behind the leader, but he able to gain one back by taking the wave around before heading back to green flag racing. Mired back in traffic for the next long run, the WinField Chevy became tighter for the Indiana native. As the laps clicked off, Armstrong began to claw his way forward once again to gain a few of his lost positions back and crossed the checkered flag in 21st.

“We had a mismatched set of tires on the second to last run that really put us behind and made the handling of our WinField Chevy just too tight,” Armstrong said. “You really have to have the perfect setup all night and have the cautions fall in your favor in a race like this, and we just didn’t have that go our way. My Turn One crew did a great job rebounding on the final stop and we had really good times in the closing laps, just didn’t have enough time to get all of our spots back.”
