Biffle hoping 20th Bristol start finally nets victory

In 19 Sprint Cup trips to Bristol Motor Speedway Biffle has done most everything except make the trip he wants the most – the one to Victory Lane.

The resume Biffle brings to Bristol for the Aug. 25 IRWIN Tools Night Race is quite impressive. He’s hammered out 11 top-10 finishes and six top-fives while failing to finish only one time. He’s completed a remarkable 2,996 laps out of the last 3,000 run in Sprint Cup events and qualified on the front row four times, including earning the pole for the Food City 500 in March.

But starting first has not equated to finishing first.

“Yeah, it’s something,” said Biffle, who is hoping his 20th BMS start Aug. 25 in the IRWIN Tools Night Race finally results in a win. “I run so well there typically. And I love challenging places to start with. I really do love Bristol. It’s always been one of the more challenging places we go, which is why I’ve been so good there. I like that challenge. I focus on it and I just attack it.

“I haven’t won there yet, but I’ve come close so many times and then had something happen. I really can’t wait to have a Bristol trophy. I’m looking more forward to a Bristol win than just about anything on the circuit. Maybe I’ll get that here in a few weeks.”

Biffle and the rest of the NASCAR world will return to a different Bristol than the one they saw in March. The surface has been revamped after a milling process erased the progressive banking in the upper groove, effectively giving the drivers less room on which to race.

“I don’t think anybody knows what’s going to happen,” he said. “The biggest thing is we don’t know what to expect when we get there. I think everybody kind of nervous and excited about seeing what the change did to the track and how we can get our cars to work and running lower on the race track and figure out how to pass.

“We’re all in the same boat, we just have to get on the race track and figure it out.”

One thing Biffle knows for sure though is that racing at BMS never gets old for him – or for the fans.

“Listen, I tell fans, if they ask me which race they should go to for the first time, I tell them, ‘you gotta go to Bristol first. You can see the whole race track, you can see all the action, there’s nothing else like it,’” he said.

“Bristol has always been at the top of my list for people who are first-time fans. They can go to some other places after they’ve been to Bristol but that definitely is the first stop.”
