Perseverance key in Ty Dillon 23rd place finish at Dover

With the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season winding down, Germain Racing has found consistency as they look to finish the year in strong fashion. Eight top-15 finishes marched into Dover with Ty Dillon and the GEICO team when they arrived for the Drydene 400 race weekend. They would again turn in a solid weekend when they departed Dover International Speedway on Sunday afternoon.

Near-perfect weather welcomed race fans to the track when they arrived to watch 400-miles of action on Sunday. Dillon and his No. 13 GEICO Camaro ZL1 rolled off of the starting grid from the 25th position when the green flag got things started at the Monster Mile. The young gun made quick progress and shot straight to 21st in the opening five laps. By lap 13, Dillon had the GEICO Camaro in the 18th positions and charging forward.

Dillon was strong, but as rubber was laid down on the track, his GEICO machine began to tighten up, causing an ill-handling racecar. Crew chief, Matt Borland, and the Germain Racing pit crew made effective changes that allowed Dillon to hold his position on the racetrack. Unfortunately, he was assessed a speeding penalty as he exited pit road on lap 172 and was forced to serve a ‘drive-through’ penalty. While initially a setback, Dillon and his No. 13 GEICO Camaro ZL1 returned to the racing surface and began moving forward, while Borland sharpened his pencil atop the pit wagon and crafted a strategy to help his driver regain lost real estate.

Both Dillon and Borland were successful in their efforts and Dillon was able to hustle back to a 23rd place finish when the checkered flag closed out 400-laps of racing, leaving their run of strong finishes intact.

“While we have struggled here the past couple of years, our Germain Racing team brought a solid GEICO Camaro ZL1 to the track this weekend,” Dillon said after the race. “We had two good practices, picked up speed in qualifying and put ourselves in a position to capitalize during the race. Once the track started to rubber-in during the first stage though, our car kept getting tighter and tighter. We tried to keep up with the changes, but the cautions didn’t fall our way. I sped on pit road during the second stage, but our team didn’t give up on our effort and to still finish 23rd is a solid result.”
Restrictor-plate racing is up next for Germain Racing, as they make their way to Talladega, AL, for race number 31 of the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series season. During the GEICO 500 in April, Dillon won the second stage of his career en route to a 17th place finish.

Ty Dillon and the No. 13 GEICO Camaro ZL1 will hit the track at Talladega Superspeedway for the weekend’s opening practice session on Friday, October 11th, at 1:35 PM (ET). Qualifying will follow on Saturday at 4:35 PM (ET).
