For the second time in his career, Kyle Busch will start on the pole for Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Thursday was also Busch’s third pole of the season with a top speed of 191.836 mph at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Busch’s other Coca-Cola 600 pole was in 2008.
While driver NO. 18 may have a All-Star victory at the 1.5 mile track, he has no points paying win as of yet.
“The M&M’s Camry was fast, it felt pretty good,” Kyle Busch told Fox Sports 1 post-qualifying. “The guys did an amazing job in practice, we weren’t very good in practice. Fortunately I had extra track time, I got my Xfinity ride to thank a little bit of that today. It’s all good, it was pure talent all the way around, this whole team.”
Joining Kyle Busch on the front row will be Joey Logano, who posted a speed of 191.218 mph. Thursday’s second fastest time during qualifying ties Logano’s best qualifying result at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Rounding out the top five were Denny Hamlin, Erik Jones and Brad Keselowski.
Ryan Newman, who qualified sixth is driver NO. 31’s best qualifying start since his pole run in 2010.
Hendrick Motorsports: None of the Hendrick Motorsports driver’s made the top 20 which is a shock to most of us. Hendrick Motorsport’s has had dominate success at Charlotte Motor Speedway in the past with Jimmie Johnson in recent years. William Byron qualified 21st and Chase Elliott and Jimmie Johnson followed. Alex Bowman qualified 27th.
“I got told that the fast guys had run the top and I tried it and it didn’t work,” Alex Bowman said. “I mean that’s my fault, I should have stuck with what I know, but our Nationwide 88 car is not bad, we shouldn’t be that far back, but we will be okay on Sunday.”
Kevin Harvick: The defending Coca-Cola 600 pole sitter, will start from the rear on Sunday after his NO. 4 Ford failed inspection three times. Harvick’s car chief, Robert Smith has been ejected for the rest of the weekend. Also, Harvick will serve a 3o minute practice hold on Saturday. Sunday, Harvick will look to win three consecutive races for the second time this season.
The Monster Energy Series will have all of Friday off before returning to Charlotte Motor Speedway for practice at 9:05 a.m. Eastern on Fox Sports 1.
