Gaunt Brothers Racing (GBR) and driver D.J. Kennington finished 31st Sunday evening at ISM Raceway.
Making its second start of the 2018 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season, the No. 96 Northern Provincial Pipelines Toyota Camry team scored a result three positions better than its 34th-place qualifying effort. Sunday’s race, what amounted to a 500-kilometer learning process for the young team, was GBR’s first visit to a 1-mile track for a Cup Series race. Attempting to alleviate a tight handling condition, GBR was able to provide Kennington with satisfactory comfort toward the conclusion of the event.
“By the last run, we were pretty decent,” said Kennington, who made his 12th career NASCAR national series start at ISM. “At that point, we were [in line with] the fast guys. It stinks we started off so tight, but we learned a lot.”
GBR owner Marty Gaunt praised his team’s race-long effort.
“We want a result better than that, but all things considered, it wasn’t a bad day,” said Gaunt. “Our guys worked really hard. Today was another stepping stone toward getting our team to where we want to be.”
