Willy was an advocate for equality, participating in a number of races including the Indianapolis 500, Trans-Am Series, IndyCar, Champ Car, IMSA, The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and Craftsman Truck Series races. In his first year of competition, Wiilly won the 1976 Formula Ford Dunlop Championship. He later received the 1983 Trans-Am Series Rookie of the Year Award.
