Second Chances Play Important Role in McDowell’s Racing Success

It’s never easy to reach the pinnacle level of racing, but NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) driver Michael McDowell has always strived to do just that throughout his time in the sport. The driver of the No. 95 Thrivent Racing Chevrolet SS has had quite the journey to get to the spot he’s at now – achieving his NASCAR career first win at Road America last month – and having second chances in racing has since inspired him to make the most of every opportunity.

“In 2008, I ran with Michael Waltrip Racing and had a decent rookie year,” said McDowell. “I lost my ride at MWR at the end of the season and kind of felt like that was the end of the road for me in the Sprint Cup Series, but then I had one of the biggest breaks of my career in 2009 at Richmond with Tommy Baldwin Racing. I had to get the No. 36 car in the field. They had a new sponsor and I was able to make it happen and that was a breakthrough for me.”

“Then I was able to make the next few consecutive races and have some good qualifying efforts,” he continued. “I qualified in the Top-20 at Homestead, the last race of the year. That was what kind of put me back on the map in the Sprint Cup Series, as a guy who can get cars into the race, so that was a second chance for me. Every time I felt like I was getting to the end of my Sprint Cup career a new opportunity came about. I’m very thankful, I’ve been really fortunate to have a lot of chances to stay in the sport.”
