IMS an Inspirational Place for Michael McDowell

One of the most inspirational tracks for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Michael McDowell and the No. 95 Thrivent Financial Chevrolet SS team is Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The 2.5-mile track is home to some of the most prestigious races in the world, including the Indianapolis 500 and Brickyard 400, and is a race weekend McDowell looks forward to every year.

“There definitely is a cool factor to Sunday’s race,” explained McDowell. “Just being there, the atmosphere – it’s big for me. This is bigger than Daytona to me. It’s a different feeling and different setting. For me, this is the race I look forward to the most. I’ve had it in my mind since I was 10 years that I wanted to race at Indy one day.”

“You can't really put into words what it’s like the first time you start at Indy,” he continued. “I grew up an Indy car and open wheel fan. When I was a kid and we traveled to the Midwest for racing, we took a tour of the museum and rode around the track in the vans.  It’s a really special place. So for my first start there in 2008, it seemed like just a normal race weekend until the race.  Lining up on the race track and firing up the race cars and then coming to the green flag with the grandstands full of fans – I thought to myself ‘Man, this is what I’ve been working for my whole life!’”

Fans can share their own stories about how their families motivate them through Thrivent Racing’s new inspirational message program at Race fans can upload photos, videos or text explaining how they are inspired and how they inspire others, as well as check out submissions from others.
