Miles “The Monster” could not tame the rain at Dover International Speedway on Friday.
The talk for the entire week was how Hurricane Joaquin would impact the Chase cutoff race at Dover. Not only is the Sprint Cup Series in action, but the XFINITY Series has a key race in the run toward the championship, and the K&N Pro Series East was scheduled to crown a champion on Friday.
Cup Series qualifying was rained out which will slate Matt Kenseth on the pole for the AAA400. With the field being set by driver championship points, the first three starting spots are acquired by Joe Gibbs Racing Toyotas.
The Cup teams will have two practice sessions beginning at 11:30 on Saturday morning in preparation of the Chase cutoff of the Challenger Round. Kenseth and Hamlin are the only drivers who are locked into the Contender Round.
XFINITY Series points leader Chris Buescher will lead the field to green on Saturday. The XFINITY teams will have practice on Saturday morning prior to their scheduled green flag start time of 3:30.
The NASCAR K&N East Series will race at 9:30 on Saturday to determine the champion. Currently, William Byron is coming into Dover as the point’s leader by 13 points over Scott Heckert and 14 ahead of Austin Hill. Combined those three drivers have won eight of the 13 races this season.
The weather forecast has improved for the rest of the weekend has improved quite a bit from what was projected earlier in the week. Sunday looks to be driest day with a 40% chance of precipitation and racing.
