NASCAR Driver Michael McDowell Volunteers To Repair Indianapolis Home

Prior to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, NASCAR driver Michael McDowell joined forces with his sponsor, Thrivent Financial, to volunteer with Greater Indy Habitat for Humanity and help a local homeowner.

McDowell and members of his No. 95 Leavine Family Racing team, along with Thrivent and Greater Indy Habitat for Humanity volunteers spent six hours repairing a house in Northeast Indianapolis that needed exterior siding repair, exterior painting and brush removal.

“I’m thrilled to be a part of the Thrivent Builds Repairs project again,” said McDowell.  “The impact Thrivent is making in communities across the nation is amazing.  I’m also excited to have K-LOVE Radio volunteers from Indianapolis join us today.  It’s great to be able to give back to this community before we go racing.”

Thrivent is the largest non-governmental supporter of Habitat for Humanity International through a unique alliance called Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity, now in its 10th year.  More than 4,000 homes have been built or repaired, and $213 million and 4.4 million volunteer hours have been contributed by Thrivent and its members through the Thrivent Builds program.

Taking its commitment to Habitat a step further, Thrivent Racing – the partnership between Thrivent and Leavine Family Racing – recently introduced an online game where race fans can be part of a $95,000 donation from Thrivent to Habitat for Humanity. Through Oct. 15, each fan who plays at ThriventRacing.com will unlock a donation from Thrivent to Habitat for Humanity in the amount of $1 to $95 and fans will also have the choice to add their own contribution or express interest in volunteering for a Habitat build. Additionally, they have the chance to win Thrivent Racing prizes and they’ll be entered into a grand prize drawing for a VIP trip for two to the championship race weekend on Nov. 22 in Homestead, Fla.

“We love having Michael (McDowell) in Indianapolis today trading out his driving gloves for work gloves and embodying Thrivent’s mission to live generously,” said Craig Stacey, Thrivent Director of Marketing.  “We hope a lot of race fans will join Michael in supporting this great cause, either by volunteering on a Habitat project in their own community or playing the Driven to Thrive to 95 online game to be part of our donation to Habitat.”

The homeowners needed assistance with exterior work due to medical and job changes in their lives.  The home repairs to be completed by Greater Indy Habitat, Thrivent Financial, Michael McDowell’s team and their church, Castleton Nazarene, will enable the family to focus on making the necessary changes to the interior of the home to make it safe in light of the medical conditions.

“In an effort to better meet the needs of our city, Habitat has continued to expand our services to not only build new homes but also rehab abandoned or foreclosed homes and provide basic repairs for homeowners in need,” said Jim Morris, Greater Indy Habitat for Humanity president and CEO. “Through the support of partners like Thrivent Financial alongside Michael McDowell and Leavine Family Racing, we are able to give the Beery family a much-needed hand up and help them stay in their home, while also creating awareness around the need for quality, affordable housing in our community.”
