Stewart-Haas Racing announced Wednesday at the NASCAR Hall of Fame that Kevin Harvick will sport a special Budweiser paint scheme at the Darlington Raceway on September 6th in the Southern 500.
The paint scheme, mainly gold, represents the color of the first Budweiser can produced. The can featured the famous “A” with an eagle flying through the Anheuser-Busch logo. Below the eagle featured the saying “Lager Beer.”
Darlington Raceway serves as one of the oldest tracks on the NASCAR circuit. The facility has been on the series schedule since around the 1950s and celebrated the 65th running of the Southern 500 last season.
“It’s great that Darlington is embracing its rich tradition with the Southern 500’s return to Labor Day weekend,” said Harvick in a press release, who currently leads the Sprint Cup Series championship standings. “Budweiser saw this as an excellent opportunity to celebrate its own history by racing the colors and design from the first can Budweiser ever made. It’s a sharp-looking car and the No. 4 team is ready to get back to Darlington’s victory lane.”
The first Southern 500 race dates back to Labor Day 1950. The race was put on after a deal between NASCAR founder Bill France Sr. and Brasington. With 80 entries for the exclusive event, John Mantz stole the victory, marking the first winner of the event at the 1.366-mile oval.
“At Budweiser we are known for celebrating great times, and there have been a lot of great times through the years at Darlington Raceway – none more so than last year when Kevin took the Budweiser Chevy to victory lane in the Southern 500,” said Corey Christanell, director of sports marketing, Anheuser-Busch in a release. “Being able to celebrate Darlington’s rich heritage is something we’re proud to do with Kevin, the No. 4 Budweiser team and everyone at Stewart-Haas Racing.”
