Ron Hornaday Jr 2015 NSCS Daytona International Speedway Race Preview

It’s time to get back to racing. For Ron Hornaday Jr., the sport’s biggest race, the Daytona 500, is as good a place as any to kick of the 2015 season. It’s been more than three months since the four-time NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) champion has been behind the wheel of a race car. After spending 17 years in the NCWTS, amassing 51 victories, and four championship titles, the veteran driver was left without a ride half-way through the 2014 NCWTS season when his Turner Scott Motorsports team was shut down due to lack of funding. Hornaday, who was third in the driver point standings at the time, competed in three more races in 2014 for NTS Motorsports and hasn’t been back behind the wheel since Oct. 31 at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth.

The 56-year-old driver, who has made 589 starts across NASCAR’s top-three series, will be back behind the wheel in 2015 for The Motorsports Group, piloting the No. 30 Chevrolet SS in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS). Hornaday, who has 45 starts in the NSCS, will attempt to make the 57th annual Daytona 500 on Sunday, Feb. 22, his first series start since 2003. The veteran driver, who has one start at the 2.5-mile superspeedway in the NSCS, started 42nd and finished 17th in 2001.

Sounding off – Ron Hornaday:

“I’ve had some more time off than I would have liked, so I’m ready to get back to the track and back behind the wheel. It’s been 14 years since I’ve driven a cup car and a lot of things have changed in our sport since then. I’m a racer though and I look forward to the challenges that this opportunity presents. The guys at the shop have been working hard during the off-season to prepare for their first cup start. Making the race is going to be tough, but I’m confident in what Curtis (Key, owner) has put together. Pat (Tryson, crew chief) has been around the garage for a long time and he knows what it takes. I’m ready to get going.”

No. 30 Smokey Mountain Herbal Snuff Chevrolet SS:

The Motorsports Group will unload chassis No. 702 for the 57th annual Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway. This chassis has a brand new superspeedway body and will make its debut during Speedweeks with Hornaday as he attempts to make his second NSCS start at the 2.5-mile superspeedway.
