Geico Chevy driver Casey Mears set to race in Sprint Unlimited at Daytona

This season, the NASCAR Sprint Unlimited will also feature chase drivers, expanding its field to 25 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series racers. For the first time in the team’s history, Germain Racing will enter the No. 13 GEICO Chevrolet SS in the Sprint Unlimited, driven by Casey Mears. Mears is eligible by way of his status in the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Drivers Points Standings. This year’s race will be held on Saturday night, February 14th, and one team owner is certainly hoping it’s a sweetheart of an evening.

“We are really looking forward to participating in the Sprint Unlimited race,” said team owner Bob Germain Jr. “The team has done a great job preparing for the season, which allowed us to accept this opportunity. I can’t wait to watch Casey Mears and the GEICO Chevy SS compete for the win under the lights at Daytona.”

NASCAR veteran Casey Mears is poised to enter the pre-season Sprint Unlimited for the third time in his Sprint Cup career.

“Being part of the Sprint Unlimited field is a great reward for all the hard work put in by everyone on the GEICO Chevy SS team. Germain Racing has built a very competitive superspeedway program. Anytime we bring the GEICO Chevy to Daytona, we definitely have a shot at collecting the win so I’m excited to see what we can do. This will be my third time racing in the Sprint Unlimited. The fan involvement in setting the starting lineup should add an interesting twist,” said Mears who will race GEICO Chevy chassis 387 in the Sprint Unlimited.

The move to include all chase drivers this year will certainly add an extra level of excitement to a 75-lap shootout that already boasts a finishing margin of less than a tenth of a second in each of the top three closest finishes. The Sprint Unlimited is a perfect teaser to get fans in the mood for the spirited Daytona 500, which will take place a week later on Sunday, February 22nd at 1 PM ET.
