Alex Bowman and the No. 23 Dustless Blasting Toyota Camry finished 36th at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International on Sunday afternoon. Bowman received extensive front-end damage after being involved in a lap 56 accident, which forced the rookie’s BK Racing team to lose valuable time and track position while making necessary repairs.
Bowman rolled off 36th for his first Sprint Cup Series start at Watkins Glen International. Known for its treacherous twists and turns, Bowman was expecting a challenging day at the high-speed road course. Early in the event, Bowman reported a loose car through three of the turns, as well as some concern slowing that required him to pump the brakes.
Bowman visited pit road on lap 22 after an early spin that did not bring out the caution. With adjustments made to his racecar, the Sunoco Rookie contender returned to the track and slowly climbed through the field. However, his climb was slowed on lap 56 when he was involved in a large accident exiting the fifth turn. With heavy front-end damage, Bowman’s Dustless Blasting Toyota team had to wait over an hour to begin repairs as the red flag was displayed over the 2.45-mile road course. When the red flag was lifted, Bowman’s crew promptly went to work, and with repairs made the team was able to continue to the checkered flag without further incident. By the time the checkered flag waved, Bowman was scored in the 36th position.
“We didn’t have the day we had hoped for with our Dustless Blasting Toyota Camry,” commented Bowman. “We were doing fairly well, but when that accident happened coming off of turn five we didn’t have anywhere to go. We had pretty significant damage to the front end of the racecar, and my BK Racing team did a great job making repairs to allow us to drive to the finish. It’s just one of those races where you wish your finishing position reflected your effort.”
