Bowman’s charge falls flat with right front tire in Dover

Alex Bowman and the No. 23 Dr Pepper team finished 40th at Dover (Del.) International Speedway on Sunday, June 1. After having a flat right front tire in lap 65, the problem reoccurred on lap 222 sending Bowman’s Toyota Camry into the outside retaining wall. With severe damage to his car, the BK Racing team was forced to the garage and relegated to a 40th-place finish.

Competing at Dover for the first time in a Sprint Cup Series car, Bowman rolled off 35th for Sunday’s 400-mile race. Early in the event, Bowman called into his Dr Pepper team to report a tight handling condition on his Camry. The tightness of the car added additional pressure and abuse to the right front tire, which succumbed to the strain and went flat on lap 65. The resulting damage sent Bowman down pit road for repairs and adjustments, but with only minor damage Bowman was able to continue in the event.

Despite a series of adjustments, Bowman continued to fight a tight-in-the-center condition throughout the afternoon.  On lap 222, Bowman again suffered a flat right front tire in the center of turns 1 and 2.  With hard contact against the outside retaining wall, the damage was too severe to continue and Bowman was forced to the garage area for the remainder of the event.  By the time the checkered flag waved, the No. 23 Dr Pepper Toyota Camry was scored in the 40th position.

“We definitely didn’t get the finish we were hoping for with our No. 23 Dr Pepper Toyota Camry team today,” commented Bowman.  “This track is known for being really, really tough.  It’s wears out both competitors and equipment, and unfortunately, it really took a toll on our right front tires today.  Some weeks you’ll see tires wear out easily, but you don’t often lose two tires in the same race.  We’ll take the car back to the shop and evaluate if there were any other factors that contributed to the flat tires, and we’ll get better from there.  We’re still a young team and I’m a rookie driver, so as long as we’re getting better every week, we’re doing what we set out to do.”
