NSCS: Jeff Gordon Scores 89th Victory at Kansas Speedway

Last night at the Kansas Speedway, Jeff Gordon came out of no where to finally grab his first win of the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season. By just leading nine total laps of the evening, Gordon earned his 89th career win in his 736th Sprint Cup Series start. He also became the first driver at the 1.5-mile oval to have three wins as he won the first two races in 2001 and 2002. Gordon said during post-race press conferences that when they repaved Kansas, it didn’t fit his driving style, and that it did give him bad luck. He also added that the older racing surfaces fit his style much more than new.

Finishing in the second spot was Kevin Harvick who won the pole on Friday and nearly done exactly what he did last October but fell just short of the win. Harvick led the most laps of any driver by leading a total of 119 of the 267 laps that was completed. This second place finish last night gave Harvick his fifth top-10 finish this season. Harvick lost the race by just 0.112 seconds.

Finishing in the third spot was Kasey Kahne to score his seventh top-10 finish in 14 races at the Kansas Speedway. Kasey, who nearly won this race last year, led a total of 22 laps of the evening and led two different times through the event. Kahne leaves Kansas improving his average finish to 17.6 and hopes to continue the streak at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The highest finishing rookie was Kyle Larson who finished in the 12th spot. After a solid qualifying run, which was from the fifth starting spot, Larson was able to have an advantage to get the highest finishing rookie honors of the night. Larson will head into the summer portion of the schedule with an average finish of 15.1.

Jeff Gordon will leave Kansas continuing to lead the points standings by 15 over Matt Kenseth. Kyle Busch, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Carl Edwards rounds out the top-five as they head into the hot summer months of the calender. With the win, Gordon will no longer have to fall back on the points lead, as he’s pretty much solidly locked into the Chase.

The next events for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will be All-Star race weekend on May 16th and 17th. The Sprint Showdown will take place on Friday, May 16th at 6:00 p.m. Et, live on FOX Sports 1. The Sprint All-Star race will take place on the 17th at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. That race can also be seen at 7:00 p.m. Et, live on FOX Sports 1. The Motor Racing Network will provide the live radio coverage of both events.
