Bowman fights balance, finishes 37th in Vegas

Alex Bowman and the No. 23 Dr Pepper Toyota Camry team finished 37th at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday afternoon.  After qualifying in the 36th position for the 400-mile event, Bowman raced as high as the 30th position during the opening laps of the race.  However, as the afternoon progressed, Bowman and his BK Racing team needed to focus on the balance of their car leading up to the checkered flag.

Bowman rolled off 36th for the KOBALT 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday afternoon.  Immediately on the move, Bowman raced as high as the 30th position during the opening stint of the race.  With their car a bit loose in the center of the turns, Bowman and his BK Racing team discussed their strategy to tune the balance of their Toyota Camry early in the race.  With the condition worsening as the race progressed, the team took a major swing at the Dr Pepper Toyota Camry with a wedge adjustments during the second caution of the day.

The leaders set a blistering pace at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, where the field only completed 18 laps under the caution flag.  With the majority of the race taking place under green flag conditions, competitors spread out on the racing surface and differentials in both speed and position between the leaders and teams facing adversity became apparent as the race progressed.  While Bowman’s team worked aggressively to dial in the handling of the Dr Pepper Toyota Camry, the team found themselves removed from contention due to the pace of the overall race.  Unable to regain track position in the fast-paced race, Bowman crossed the finish line in the 37th position.

“One of the cool things about racing at BK Racing this season is the youth of the team-the organization is only three years old, and yet they were willing to give two rookies like Ryan Truex and myself an incredible opportunity to race their cars,” commented Bowman.  “This was my first race in a Sprint Cup car at an intermediate track, and I feel like our Dr Pepper team learned a lot throughout the 400 mile race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.  We were able to work on the handling of our car, I learned a lot about how different adjustments reacted on the track, and we were able to really work on our communication as a team.  I’m really happy to have this team of guys, BK Racing and Dr Pepper behind my racing efforts in 2014, and I’m looking forward to getting to Bristol Motor Speedway next weekend.”
