The Daytona 500 has seen its share of veteran drivers in the first 55 years of its existence. However, the 56th running of the historic event one of the oldest drivers to ever strap into a racecar will try and take his turn and try and make the Daytona 500.
Veteran driver Morgan Shepherd from Ferguson, North Carolina will run a #93 Toyota with Support Miltary Foundation on the car. The team is a collaboration of BK Racing, Hamilton-Means Racing and MacDonald Motorsports. Dell Hamilton co-owner of the team is excited about the opportunity with Shepherd.
“Whenever you can break a record or make history, it’s something special. To have Morgan in the car and the SMF presented on the car we couldn’t be happier,” said Dell Hamilton. “We are still looking for a presenting sponsor for the race, Support Military Foundation colors will be on the car but we are hoping for a presenting sponsor to come along and help us with this unique initiative.”
Shepherd brings loads of experience to the team. He made his first career Cup start in 1970 at Hickory Motor Speedway. All together Shepherd has made 515 career Sprint Cup Series starts and four wins to his credit. Shepherd will be looking to make his 16th career start in the Daytona 500 with a best finish of second back in 1992 when he finished second to Davey Allison. In addition Shepherd also has 351 starts in the Nationwide Series and 56 career Camping World Truck Series starts. Prior to the Nationwide Series Shepherd was also and avid driver in the NASCAR Sportsman Series.
No word on who the crew chief of the #93 car will be for the Daytona 500.
