Ryan Truex and the No. 83 Burger King / Dr Pepper Toyota Camry team finished 41st at Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway on Sunday afternoon. After sustaining a broken rear gear just past the halfway mark, Truex lost several laps while in the garage for repairs, but returned to the track to finish in the 41st position.
Rookie contender Truex rolled off 34th for his first Sprint Cup Series road course race on Sunday afternoon. Gaining four positions in the opening 10 laps, Truex spent the early laps of the race setting his rhythm and examining the balance of his racecar. Over the opening rounds of pit stops, the BK Racing team made a variety of chassis adjustments to fine-tune the handling and give Truex more grip when navigating the corners.
On lap 62, Truex called into the crew to report something amiss in the drivetrain. Stalled on the course, NASCAR displayed the caution flag and Truex got a push back to the garage area where the BK Racing team was able to diagnose a broken rear gear. Working quickly, the team was able to replace the gear and get the Burger King / Dr Pepper Toyota Camry back on track. Truex went on to cross the finish line in the 41st position.
“We ran into some bad luck today with our Burger King / Dr Pepper Toyota Camry,” commented Truex. “This is a very unique road course and it can be hard on equipment. Unfortunately, we lost our rear gear just past the halfway point, and while the guys were able to fix it very quickly, it got us behind on the scoring chart. When we get back to the shop we’ll take everything apart to try to determine what caused the failure-that’s how we get better and make sure we don’t have the same problem reoccur. We’re looking forward to next weekend’s race at Kentucky Speedway and continuing to build on our mile-and-a-half program.”
