Despite Repave, Ragan Says ‘It’s Still the Same Old Pocono’

David Ragan, driver of the No. 34 Taco Bell Ford, comments on racing at Pocono Raceway:

“Pocono, since the repave, is definitely a little easier for tuning on your car. Prior to the repave, tire wear was an issue and it was a challenging racetrack. It’s a little bit better, a little smoother and definitely a lot faster since the repave. But at the same time, it’s still the same old Pocono. You still have three completely different corners — a high-banked corner, a relatively flat corner through Turn 2, and then 3 is nice and wide and really sweeping to set yourself up for that front straightaway.

“What we’ve had happen in the last four or five years with Kansas and Michigan and Pocono, and you can even throw Darlington and Charlotte in there, the asphalt is so well put down and engineered so perfectly that it doesn’t change as much as it used to when you had repaves back in the 90s. So I think the race surface at Pocono is still going to be very grippy and very smooth.”

JUST THE FACTS: Ragan has 14 Sprint Cup career starts at Pocono Raceway … He has one top-5, one top-10 and two top-15 finishes at the 2.5-mile oval … His best finish at Pocono is fifth (2008).
