Fresh off a 11th place finish in this past Saturday night’s Las Vegas 350, Young’s Motorsports (YMS) has steadily shown an improvement which has the veteran NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) looking forward to the rest of the 2017 season.
The Mooresville, N.C.-based team welcomed veteran Timothy Peters behind the wheel of the No. 02 Henry County Va. / Autos by Nelson Chevrolet for the 18th race of the season.
After making aggressive changes to their truck through a productive practice, Peters qualified 20th, but the team led by crew chief Chad Kendrick noticed a potential issue with the truck, sending them to the rear before the green flag.
Using his talent, Peters found himself back to the position he qualified by the conclusion of Lap 1.
Throughout the early race stages, Peters battled the handling of his truck, but throughout the 147-lap race, assertive adjustments from Kendrick allowed Peters to contend for a top-10 finish in the closing laps, before settling for 11th when the checkered flag flew.
“Timothy was a great addition for our Young’s Motorsports team,” said team principal and driver Tyler Young. “He was able to come to the race track and really help us digest our program while giving nothing less than 110 percent behind the wheel. For that, we’re extremely thankful.
“We made steady gains throughout the race and I think the suggestions he offered will help us make us better for places like Texas, Homestead and next year for sure. He is welcome to come back and drive for our team anytime.”
Competing in the final standalone race of the season this past weekend at Las Vegas, it would be hard for Young and his team not to reflect on the tragedy that occurred on Sunday night, with the team still in town doing some boding and teambuilding exercises.
“Speaking on behalf of the team, our thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Las Vegas,” Young sounded. “The people of Las Vegas and their tourists have always been courteous, polite and embracing anytime that NASCAR comes to town.
“It was a senseless tragedy that impacted so many forever. As we press on with our season, we will continue to pray for those affected.”
With the penultimate off-weekend of the season on-deck this weekend, the Young’s Motorsports team is putting the final touches of their superspeedway chassis for the Oct. 14 running of the fred’s 250 fueled by Coca-Cola.
“As a team, we’re really looking forward to Talladega,” added Young. “We had a good top-12 finish with Dylan (Lupton) in his Truck Series debut and although we lost our truck in a crash in the season-opening race at Daytona, we’re excited about the new piece we have and look to contend for a really good finish.”
Young Motorsports scored their career-best finish on the superspeedway track of Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway last February with Young behind the wheel.
Hoping to better that finish this past February, Young was knocked out from competition after being swept into the “big one” on Lap 2 of the season-opening event.
Next weekend, the Midland, Texas native hopes his team can deliver a strong superspeedway rebound.
“We’ve been able to produce some strong trucks on the superspeedways and Young’s Motorsports is proud of that,” added Young. “The end of the season is near and hopefully we can continue to produce some strong finishes that will take us into the off-season and make our 2018 season our best yet.”
In 76 career NCWTS starts, Young holds four top-10 finishes to his credit with a career-best sixth at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in February 2016. A sixth-place qualifying effort at Eldora Speedway in July 2015 is his best time trials effort to date. Young’s Motorsports has competed on the tour since 2012.
