Gallagher Finishes 16th in Chaotic Ending at Michigan

In his second NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) start at Michigan International Speedway, Spencer Gallagher ran solidly inside the top-10 in the closing stages of the Careers for Veterans 200. The Las Vegas native muscled his backup No. 23 Allegiant Travel Chevrolet into to the top 10 through the three chaotic restarts over the event’s final 19 circuits. However, a last-lap incident relegated Gallagher to an unceremonious 16th-place finish.

Gallagher and his GMS Racing team’s preparedness was showcased during practice as the No. 23 Allegiant Travel team showed immediate speed after unloading a backup truck following an on-track incident. The Las Vegas native took the green flag from the 14th position and battled a tight condition through the race’s first fuel run. Gallagher ran inside the top 15 until the first pit stop of the day, which came under the yellow flag on lap 27. Crew chief Jeff Stankiewicz called for four tires and fuel, along with air pressure and spring rubber adjustments to improve Gallagher’s balance. Restarting 10th, Gallagher nursed a free condition while battling for position inside the top 15. Gallagher made his second, and final, visit to the Allegiant Travel team on pit road under the green flag on lap 67 for four tires, fuel, and air pressure tweaks.

Through the race’s final three restarts, Gallagher fought hard for position, restarting on the bottom line, and advanced from 15th to run inside the top 10. Gallagher took the white flag running ninth, but contact from the No. 13 truck on the backstretch turned him into the outside wall, resulting in the 16th-place finish behind race winner Kyle Busch.

Gallagher remains ninth in the NCWTS driver championship standings.

SPENCER GALLAGHER QUOTE:

“Until the backstretch of the last lap, we were going to have a real good day. Our Allegiant Travel Chevy had pretty good speed all day. (We) didn’t get track position early on, but we were making spots back up left, right, and center on the restarts. Just got tangled up in a racing incident late in the race there. We’ll be on to Bristol (Motor Speedway). We’ve got fast stuff, and we’ll keep at it.”
