Tyler Reddick Kansas Speedway Recap

Tyler Reddick experienced a little bit of everything in the Toyota Tundra 250 Friday night at Kansas Speedway.  The driver of the No. 19 Broken Bow Records Ford F-150 rebounded from an accident in qualifying only to have a chance to win the race thwarted by a lack of Sunoco race fuel.

A “scary loose” truck had Reddick (@TylerReddick) spinning off Turn 2 in qualifying and he was hit by teammate Austin Theriault.  The incident in qualifying forced the team to hastily prepare a backup No. 19 Ford F-150 for the race.  Tyler started at the rear of the 32 truck field when the green flag waved to start the 167 lap race where he quickly moved up through traffic – despite zero practice time in his backup.

Reddick showed the strength of his Broken Bow Records Ford F-150 truck on lap 47 with a power move on a restart following the second caution of the race.  He went from sixth to third in just one lap and stayed there until the third caution waved on lap 67.  One lap later he pitted for four tires and adjustments and restarted seventh (some of his competitors chose a two tire strategy).

When the race went green on lap 71, once again Reddick went to work picking off positions.  He climbed back to third place as the race passed the 100 lap mark.  He pitted for four tires and adjustments on lap 112 during the fourth and final caution of the race.  Outstanding pit work gave Reddick the lead on lap 113 and he held the top spot the next three laps before settling into second place after the restart.  With fuel mileage a concern among the leaders, Reddick employed a strategy of trying to pressure race leader Erik Jones into running hard and consequently using more fuel.

The strategy nearly paid off with a win.  On lap 162 Jones slowed, the victim of a dry tank, giving Reddick the lead.  He held the top spot for the next three laps until he ran out on lap 165, just two laps from the checkered flag, leaving him with a 13th place finish.  Reddick is second in the series championship standings, 17 points behind the leader.
