Wallace Drives to 14th-Place Finish in Indy

Bubba Wallace, driver of the No. 6 Ford EcoBoost Ford Mustang, improved 26 positions over the course of Saturday afternoon’s NASCAR XFINITY Series main event at Indianapolis Motor Speedway to record a 14th-place finish.

“We were able to salvage a decent finish,” said Wallace after the race. “I didn’t know what was going on during the pace laps for the main and it stinks that we had to take the green from the rear after coming down pit road but I’m proud of my guys’ effort on this Ford Mustang. We’ll move on from this and go get them next weekend in Iowa.”

Wallace was scheduled to begin the 60-Lap main event from the 14th position after finishing seventh in the second heat race of the afternoon but an issue during the pace laps forced the Ford EcoBoost Mustang to pit road. After diagnosing the issue on pit road, Wallace returned to the track to take the green flag from the tail end of the field.

Wallace wasted little time moving forward, improving 11 positions at the completion of the first lap and a total of 23 positions before the first round of green flag pit stops on Lap 26. Wallace returned to the track following the stop in the 17th position but raced his way into the top 15 just seven laps later.

The Roush Fenway Racing driver continued to push forward, but ultimately fell a lap down to the race leaders due to the lengthy green flag run and the loss of track position at the start. Wallace never gave up despite being one lap down and drove his way into the 14th position before a late caution on Lap 54 gave crew chief Seth Barbour the opportunity to pit one last time for fresh tires.

Wallace returned to the track for NASCAR’s Overtime in 16th and utilized a three-wide move on the final lap to take the checkered flag in the 14th position.
