Smithley optimistic for Daytona

Buoyed by a strong finish at Talladega Superspeedway earlier this season, Garrett Smithley is looking forward to making his Xfinity Series debut at Daytona International Speedway in Friday’s Subway Firecracker 250.

Smithley ran 12th at Talladega, his best finish of the season in the JD Motorsports with Gary Keller Instalco Chevrolet.

“There is nothing like Daytona International Speedway,” Smithley said. “It’s where every driver dreams of racing as a kid. I’ve been fortunate to race there last year in the ARCA series, but now competing in the Xfinity Series takes it to a whole new level.

“We had our best finish of the year so far at Talladega, so I feel pretty good about our chances this weekend. We’ve got Instalco back on the hood, so we will work hard to get them another good finish in our blue ‘Number Nuthin’.”

Smithley finished 34th in the ARCA event at DIS last year after dropping out of the race with engine problems.

He enters Friday’s race 18th in Xfinity driver points.
