Edwards, Biffle Lead Roush Fenway With Top-Five Finishes in California

Roush Fenway’s Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle posted finishes of fourth and fifth respectively to lead the RFR effort in a wild finish in Sunday’s 400-mile Sprint Cup Series race at Auto Club Speedway.

Fireworks flew after a late-race restart led to a frantic finish that saw tempers flare and fists fly. Through it all, Edwards and Biffle calmly maneuvered through the melee and to strong finishes.

“Man, that was just an unbelievable race,” said Edwards.  “It is so cool to come here to California and have a standard old school NASCAR race where tires make a difference. It was really a great show. I hope the fans enjoyed it. That is about as good as it gets.

“Congrats to Kyle (Busch), he hung on,” added Edwards. “I knew the third place guy was going to win. I could just feel the tension up there between Joey and Denny. I had a feeling the third place guy would win. Kyle and I had a heck of a battle for third and he got me and he won the race. He did a good job.”

Race leaders Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin made contact on the final lap, with Busch moving around for the victory.

RFR rookie Stenhouse Jr. was once again solid, again completing all 200 laps of the race and moving to his fifth finish of 20th or better in five starts this season.

“It was up and down,” said Biffle. “We were pretty good at the end. I’m not sure when the caution came out and I came out of the gas a little, so I’m not sure how it will all sort out. Still, overall a top-five finish for us is a great day. It was pretty crazy on the restarts at the end. These cars, with the big spoilers, get huge runs at the end.”

The finish marked Edwards’ third top-five finish in five starts in 2013 and Biffle’s second top-10.

With the finishes Biffle and Edwards moved within striking distance of the top spot in the Sprint Cup points standings; 34 and 35 points outside of first.

After taking Easter weekend off, Roush Fenway and the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series return to action in two weeks at Martinsville Speedway. RFR has won four times in Sprint Cup action at Martinsville.
